Masters (Coursework)

Armidale
The Master of Professional Psychology provides selected psychology graduates with a fifth year of professional training in psychology.
Entry Requirements

A candidate shall:

(a) hold an AQF Level 8 four-year Bachelor honours in Psychology, or AQF level 7 three-year accredited sequence in Psychology plus an AQF Level 8 fourth year Bachelor honours or Graduate Diploma, Australian Psychology Accreditation Council (APAC)-accredited sequence in Psychology within the last 10 years and be eligible for registration with the Psychology Board of Australia (PsyBA) as a provisional psychologist. An exception to the 10-year rule may be made for currently registered psychologists who can demonstrate current compliance with the PsyBA CPD requirements seeking to gain a professional postgraduate qualification;

1. have done a National Police Certificate;

2. have done a Working with Children Check; and

3. have provisional registration with the Psychology Board of Australia.

Please Note: You may submit your application for the Master of Professional Psychology without submitting your Working With Children Check, National Police Certificate or evidence of Provisional Registration with the Psychology Board of Australia. However, should you be offered a place on the program the offer will be made on the condition that you submit each of these documents prior to the commencement of the program in Trimester 1. The Working with Children Check should be carried out according to the procedures of the state in which you are planning to conduct your clinical placement.

Selection procedures will include consideration of:

1. the applicant's academic record;

2. referee reports from at least two referees;

3. checking of original degree certificate; and

4. interviews for shortlisted candidates (face-to-face or via teleconferencing) by a panel comprising at least two members of academic staff of the Discipline of Psychology, both of whom have qualifications equivalent to those required for general registration as a psychologist.

Please note: Places in the Master of Professional Psychology are limited. Final offers are based on Interview performance, academic record and referee reports. Failure to receive an invitation to interview or offer of candidature in the program does not indicate a determination of lack of suitability for postgraduate professional psychology training but, instead, reflects the high standard of applications UNE receives each year.

Due to the high number of applications to our professional psychology programs, the University of New England does not provide individual feedback on applications or interview performance.

Entry to this course is very competitive and requires a recognised and accredited Bachelor of Arts degree (or Bachelor of Science degree) with at least 2A Honours in Psychology or its equivalent (for example an average Distinction level in a Bachelor of Psychology or Postgraduate/Graduate Diplomas in Psychology). Applicants will also need to supply referee reports and a personal statement that details their past accomplishments, future plans, and interests in the graduate psychology program for which they have applied as part of the admission process. Students with overseas qualifications who are accepted into the course and who wish to seek registration in Australia after graduation should ensure that their undergraduate qualifications meet the requirements of the relevant psychology registration board for equivalence to a four-year Australian degree in Psychology. Applications with qualifications obtained outside Australia must have a formal assessment completed by the Australian Psychological Society before submitting an application for study. The admission process includes both application and interview.
English Requirements

You must meet a minimum standard in English to study at Murdoch, which for most courses can be demonstrated by providing evidence that you have completed Year 11 and 12 in Australia at any level if you are a domestic student, or through either English proficiency tests, university preparation courses, English language courses, previous tertiary study or vocational education.

Other Requirements Graduate students must be registered from the start of their higher degree as a provisional psychologist with the Psychology Board of Australia within the first two weeks of commencing the program. As many agencies require all staff working with their clients to have police clearance, applicants are required to obtain a Federal police clearance (which will include WA clearance). In addition, if working with children, a separate screening by the Department of Community Development is required. Any agency will only be seeking information about behaviours that may place vulnerable clients at risk. The applicant meets the cost of these clearances. Please note that some organisations providing professional placements may require students to provide full immunisation records. Applicants must be in a position to provide these records if required.

Master of Psychology overview

Master level postgraduate psychology education is excellent for psychology graduates hungry for more extensive specialist knowledge. The Master of Rehabilitation Counselling from Griffith Universityis a prime example of this specialisation, making it akin to graduate certificates and diplomas. Unlike its less-extensive cousins, the Master of Psychology and its numerous branches of specialisation often take two years if undergone full time. This opens the door to a greater number of employment opportunities in exchange.

Coursework master

Most master level psychology degrees feature coursework as the predominant measure of success, requiring students to learn a combination of practical skills and theory. Deakin University offers the Master of Psychology (Organisational), an exemplar focussed on working with cross-disciplinary teams to achieve real-world results.

Research master

There are rare cases in which a research focussed Master of Psychology program can be taken, the focus being further contributions to the field rather than practical application. The Master of Science (Psychology) from RMIT is a perfect example of this, offering students the chance to develop their own research skills in addition to contributing knowledge outcomes to the field.

Employment options

Master of Psychology graduates have as many employment options open to them as specialisations. Graduates from Griffith University’s rehabilitation counselling program are granted higher opportunity to enter organisations like Rehabilitation Specialists as valued advisors. There is potential for more general employment, however. Graduates from Bond University’s Master of Psychology (Clinical) are better equipped to begin their own practice, for example.

Scholarships and funding

General funding opportunities like the Gallipoli Scholarship Fund can be the most accessible given the prerequisites are met, but in as is the case for all general scholarship funds, check the requirements carefully to ensure eligibility. Specific psychology funds are rare, but general scholarships are numerous enough to cover a diverse array of backgrounds.

Prerequisites and selection process

Master of Psychology courses are often more strict than many other master level courses, demanding four years of undergraduate psychology to enter. This means a Bachelor of Psychology with an extra year for honours or a Bachelor of Psychology with a diploma in a field of psychology. Provisional registration to the Psychology Board of Australia is often an additional requirement for entry at universities like Bond.
