Master of Food Science overview

A master’s degree in food science and technology goes further into depth with the processes in food science that allow safe and enjoyable food to be created, distributed and eaten.

Areas of academic focus can vary from food packaging, agricultural biotechnology, crop and pasture farming techniques, the food manufacturing industry, food security, and many more fascinating food-related subjects.

Depending on your chosen course, your master’s course in food science could take between one to two years to complete if you study full-time, or between two and four years if you study part-time.

Prerequisites and selection process

These will vary by university, but many institutions will require you to have a bachelor’s degree in a field such as science, engineering, medicine or medical science, or plant biosecurity. Many courses will need you to have an understanding of chemistry, biochemistry, microbiology, and/or plant, ecological, environmental or animal sciences.
