Vaccination Requirements required prior to study

Students commencing the Bachelor of Animal Science will be required to be vaccinated against both Q Fever and Tetanus before commencing study on campus.

The Q Fever vaccine, Q-Vax, will require pre-vaccination screening and can be delivered by your general practitioner. Please refer to the Government Q Fever Vaccination Fact Sheet for further information.

The Tetanus vaccine is also available from your general practitioner and requires to be updated with a booster every 10 years. If you have already received your Tetanus vaccination you will need to provide evidence that his has been received within the indicated timeframe. Prospective students must have completed a three-year undergraduate degree or Postgraduate studies in any discipline, with a GPA above 4.5 demonstrating a good level of academic ability through previous studies.

Required pre-requisite study

Prospective students are required to have successfully completed study in linguistics and head and neck anatomy, prior to admission to the Master of Speech Pathology.

  • Linguistics knowledge and skills must include knowledge of phonetics, phonology, morphology and syntax, and language analysis, equivalent to SPH101: Speech, Language and Culture
  • Head and neck anatomy knowledge must include knowledge of functional anatomy related to communication and swallowing, equivalent to BMS224: Head and Neck Anatomy.

Applicants who have not met the requirements can complete both SPH101 and BMS224 as Single Subject Studies or enrol in the Undergraduate Certificate in Health Studies in Session 3 through Charles Sturt. Alternatively, applicants can choose to undertake equivalent subjects at another university. Applicants will need to provide transcript and subject outlines detailing the pre-requisite subjects undertaken at another university.

All pre-requisite study must be satisfactorily completed prior to a student being enrolled in the Masters of Speech Pathology. Completion of these subjects at Charles Sturt or similar subjects at another institution does not provide any guarantee of success in gaining admission to the course.

Written Assessment

Applicants, with a GPA above 4.5, will need to provide answers to the below questions. Responses will be assessed in accordance with a rubric designed by the Speech Pathology Team.

  • Influence: Explain how your degree from Charles Sturt University will enable you to be a positive influence in your community and make a unique contribution to the speech pathology profession (this could include diversification of the workforce, rural and remote practice, etc.). (150 words)
  • Resilience: Resilience, supported by good self and time management skills, is an important trait to have in today's workforce, particularly when balancing social, occupational, study, and/or family commitments. Tell us about a time where you balanced competing demands for your time and showed resilience. (150 words)
  • Interpersonal and communication skills: Speech pathology is a profession in which excellent interpersonal and communication skills are essential. Describe an example of when you have demonstrated these skills in your life to support a positive outcome, and why you took the actions you did? (150 words)

Applicants for the course must meet the following admission requirements:

  • A completed Bachelor's Degree with a Grade Point Average of 4 or above in your undergraduate or more recent postgraduate studies OR a completed Bachelor's Degree with relevant life experience.
  • Successful completion of acceptable undergraduate and/or postgraduate study that is equivalent to one year of study (1.0 Equivalent Full Time Study Load - EFTSL), usually equating to eight subjects, that fall under one or more of the NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) primary curriculum KLAs.
  • To ensure applicants have an extended depth of knowledge in one curriculum KLA, a minimum of four of the eight subjects must be within one of the following seven primary curriculum KLAs:

    • Humanities and Social Sciences (HASS/HSIE)
    • Personal Development, Health and Physical Education (PDHPE)

The program for which the applicant will be eligible for entry is therefore based on assessment of the applicant's previous study in the respective primary curriculum KLA.

Applicants for the Master of Teaching (Secondary) must meet the following admission requirements to be assessed:

  • Completion of a relevant undergraduate degree (and, if applicable, appropriate postgraduate studies [AQF Levels 8-10]) that includes at least a major study in one secondary teaching area of the secondary school curriculum.
  • A Major Study is study undertaken for an equivalent to a total of three-quarters of a year of full time higher education study (0.75 EFTSL), usually comprising sequential discipline study undertaken over three years. In most programs, this equates to at least six units with no more than two at first year level and no fewer than two at third year level.
  • Meets the NESA discipline content requirements.
  • Have a Grade Point Average (GPA) of 4.0 (Pass) or above in their prior undergraduate studies OR relevant life experience.

Applicants who do not meet the above criteria on initial assessment will be offered a place in the Bachelor of Educational Studies where they can work towards meeting the entry requirements for Master of Teaching. Once the requirements have been met, students can re-apply for the Master of Teaching (Secondary).

Students are assessed for and need to enter with a First Teaching Area (major) and may have additional teaching areas/specialisations that can be first teaching areas (major) or second teaching areas (minor). Teaching areas must be approved by the Course Director.

Technology and Applied Studies (TAS) includes a number of Teaching Areas. Each TAS Teaching Areas can be assessed using the NESA Subject Content Knowledge Requirements. Some TAS Teaching Areas require an additional Teaching Area. The Course Director will assess all TAS Teaching Areas to ensure the combination aligns with course requirements. It is best to also understand the employment sector requirements for TAS teachers for future employment.

Students interested in Teacher Librarianship (must have completed a ALIA approved course) will need to first complete an Initial Teacher Education Course (Master of Teaching) with at least one First Teaching Area to become an accredited teacher. As an accredited teacher you will then be required to complete a Teacher Librarianship qualification. It is also best to check the employment sector requirements for Teacher Librarians, for future employment. If you are interested in Teacher Librarianship and have one approved teaching area, please contact the Course Team for advice about education electives to be completed in your initial teacher education course. Music can be assessed as a Teaching Area.

Note: The Graduate Entry Master of Teaching Secondary Course Accreditation requirement, requires final professional experience placement to be completed in Australia.
