What you will learn

What you will study

For each 8-point subject you are enrolled in, you should expect to spend 10 to 12 hours per week working on assignments and assigned readings, tutorial assistance, individual or group research/study, forum activity, workplace learning, and attending lectures, intensive schools, or examinations. If you are studying four subjects per session, this is equivalent to a full-time job. The workload for some subjects may vary as a result of approved course design.

Intensive school

You may need to attend an online or on-campus intensive school for certain subjects in this course. These schools usually involve lectures, tutorials and practicals that will give you a deeper understanding of your subject.

The course consists of four core subjects, and either three compulsory subjects and an elective for the standard award OR a specialisation in School Psychology. All students complete two Psychological Practice and Research subjects as part of the standard award or for the specialisation. Since professional placements may be undertaken in any of a variety of settings (public health, forensic institutions, educational organisations, private practices etc), the specific content of the placement and research will be negotiated between the external placement supervisor and the student, and will be approved by the School of Psychology's Placement Coordinator.

Career pathways

After graduating from the Master of Professional Psychology, you may obtain registration as a general psychologist following completion of a final year of a supervised internship approved by the Psychology Board of Australia (PsyBA). Registration as a general psychologist through completion of a Master of Professional Psychology, in conjunction with a PsyBA-approved practice internship, is referred to as the '5+1' internship pathway to registration. Provisionally registered psychologists must complete the National Psychology Examination before applying for general registration as a psychologist. Once you have achieved general registration as a psychologist, you can work in any area of psychology that is within your scope of competence and uses the title 'psychologist'.
