Entry Requirements
Doctor of Philosophy - Business and Economics (DR-PHILBE)

The following are minimum entry requirements and do not guarantee entry:

  1. In order to be considered for entry, you must have completed:
    • a four-year bachelor degree in a relevant discipline which includes a substantial research component equivalent to at least 25% of one year of full-time study and have achieved a minimum weighted average of 75% (80% for Economics) in the final year subjects or (University of Melbourne) equivalent, or
    • a masters degree in a relevant discipline which includes a substantial research component equivalent to at least 25% of one year of full-time study and achieved a minimum weighted average of 75% or (University of Melbourne) equivalent, or
    • a qualification and professional experience considered to be equivalent.

    and

    • a research proposal (except for applicants in the disciplines of Accounting, Economics, Finance, the Melbourne Institute);
    • a personal statement outlining why they wish to be considered for the course;
    • referee reports (except for applicants who have graduated from the University of Melbourne within the last 5 years); and
    • the endorsement of a prospective supervisor (only required for applicants in Actuarial Studies).

    Meeting these requirements does not guarantee selection.

  2. In selecting applicants, the selection committee will consider applicants:
    • prior academic performance, and if relevant, professional qualifications;
    • understanding of the research question to be explored;
    • the results of a Graduate Record Examinations (GRE) test or Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) completed within the last 5 years;
    • performance at an interview;
    • motivation and capacity to complete the course in a timely manner;
    • relevant prior research and/or professional experience; and
    • the referee reports.
  3. The Selection Committee may seek further information to clarify any aspect of an application in accordance with the Academic Board rules on the use of selection instruments.
  4. You are required to satisfy the University's English language requirements for graduate courses. The minimum English language requirements for this course are: Band 7
Core participation requirements

All PhD candidates are required to complete the equivalent of at least 12 months full-time (24 months part-time) advanced study and research in the University unless studying at an outside institution approved by the Research Higher Degrees Committee (RHDC). The RHDC will not approve entirely distance supervision or entirely on-line supervision for research higher degree students.

Throughout your candidature you are expected to attend the University in order to benefit from planning, conducting and writing up your research within a University community and environment.

The residency requirement is deemed especially important during the period of probationary candidature. During probationary candidature you are expected to interact on a regular basis with the supervisor, the department (including staff and other research students) and the University, so as:

  • to build the skills and knowledge necessary to carry out the proposed research program
  • to acquire an understanding of the standards and requirements for a PhD awarded by the University
  • to make use of support programs and facilities provided by the University throughout candidature.

Applications musts demonstrate that they meet ASIC requirements for RG 146 in all of the following Tier 1 areas:

  • Financial Planning (Personal or General Advice)
  • Life Insurance (Personal or General Advice)
  • Superannuation (Personal or General Advice)
  • Managed Investments (Personal or General Advice)
  • Securities (Personal or General Advice)
  • Self Managed Superannuation Funds

PLUS one (1) of the following criteria:

  • Entry Criteria A
    • A relevant postgraduate degree, or
    • A relevant undergraduate degree, or
    • A related Advanced Diploma plus two (2) years related industry experience
  • Entry Criteria B 
    • An unrelated postgraduate degree or undergraduate degree plus two (2) years related industry experience, or 
    • An unrelated Advanced Diploma plus five (5) years related industry experience
  • Entry Criteria C 

Academic and/or professional qualifications demonstrating potential to undertake study at this level

Relevant degree

 A relevant degree includes Accounting, Actuarial Studies, Commerce, Economics, Finance and Financial Management

Related industry experience

Related industry experience must include provision of Tier 1 financial advice.

Entry Requirements

A bachelor's degree or diploma equivalent to a UK honours degree at a minimum of second class (2.2). If you are not an English native speaker, you will be required to provide us with a proof of English language level equivalent to IELTS 6.5 or above  

Assessments

Assessments at Arden University provide an opportunity to demonstrate your strengths in a number of ways and so a variety of methods are used, these could include:

  • Reports
  • Presentations
  • Research Proposal
  • Dissertation or Journal Article

To support your development and ensure you are on the right track with your studies we will provide you with tutor feedback on every assessment you submit. If required, your Arden tutor may be able to give you suggestions for improvement and help you understand how to apply your newly acquired skills into real life settings.

Fees

Please note: These fees are for students starting in July 2019. For new applicants starting from October 2019, fees will increase by £1,000. 

Pay in Full

You can pay for your Arden University course all in one go if you have the funds. There is typically up to 10% off the total price if you pay this way.

Instalments

You can pay for your studies as you go along. That means no monthly payment obligations; you simply make the next payment when you are ready to start the next stage of your course. So if you can’t pay upfront or perhaps aren’t eligible for a student loan, you can pay in bitesize chunks.

We accept credit and debit cards (Visa, Mastercard and UK Maestro), bank transfers and cheques. Unfortunately, we are currently we are unable to accept Amex cards for payment. Students can also pay via PayPal if they are paying in GBP.

  • Completion of a three-year Australian bachelor’s degree in any field or a higher level qualification. International students with equivalent qualifications are eligible.
  • Applicants holding a business-related Australian bachelor’s or master’s degree may be eligible for exemptions.
  • Applicants with at least five years’ financial planning experience and no degree may be eligible for entry through the Graduate Certificate or Graduate Diploma of Financial Planning.
