Master of Finance overview

The Master of Finance is a comprehensive degree, providing opportunities to study fund management, estate planning, derivatives, applied valuation, portfolio construction and more. Programs offered by RMIT or The University of Adelaide tend to contain a broad array of electives to choose from, allowing students to specialise depending on their personal and career goals. This makes them a great way of either pivoting into the field or augmenting prior knowledge.

Employment options

The career options mentioned here become far more viable after completing a Master of Finance. With improve knowledge of investment practice and financial markets comes increased opportunity to join companies like JPMorgan Chase or Goldman Sachs as an investment banker, provided graduates have the ambition to rise to this challenge. Financial planning for companies like Oak Financial Planning is also viable, providing the opportunity to help businesses and individuals make sound budgetary decisions.

Scholarships and funding

The Mark Christensen Memorial Scholarship is a fund dedicated to Master of Business (Applied Finance) students, providing partial funding for their efforts. It has two main requirements, namely a demonstrated 5.5 GPA attained throughout prior study in addition to undertaking an internship with the Queensland Treasury Corporation. The experience this provides makes it one of the best opportunities for master level finance students, but others are available.

The IBISWorld Economics, Business and Finance Scholarship and 1800Approved Scholarship Grantare both excellent ways to gain partial funding. Their requirements are additionally more lax, merely requiring Australian citizenship.

Prerequisites and selection process

Where some institutions like The University of Adelaide only require a prior bachelor degree in any discipline, more competitive programs like those offered by Australian National University have stringent requirements, including but not limited to:

  • A bachelor degree in business, economics, finance or other business fields
  • A graduate certificate in finance
  • A 4.5 GPA minimum throughout prior postgraduate study
  • One year of university level mathematics study, comprised of calculus and algebra
  • Passing an English language exam

Students are therefore advised to choose their institution wisely and check their applications against relevant admission criteria before applying.
