The Master of Teaching (Primary) is a two-year graduate entry initial teacher education program for pre-service primary teachers.
Entry Requirements

A candidate shall:

(a) hold an AQF Level 7 Bachelor degree, or an AQF Level 7 Bachelor degree and an AQF Level 8 or 9 postgraduate qualification, with a GPA of at least 3.50 in which they have completed the equivalent of one full academic year or eight units of study in a discipline area or discipline areas relevant to one or more of the following Key Learning Areas KLAs):

English KLA

Communications, creative writing, English literature; language studies (English), linguistics, literature studies, media studies (ie the theoretical study of media or where the product is a literary text).

Mathematics KLA

Pure or applied mathematics; other studies of mathematics that are relevant to the central concepts, modes of enquiry and structure of the content/discipline(s) (only one unit of statistics may be counted); engineering units may be considered upon review of unit statements for appropriate mathematical content.

Science and Technology KLA

Agriculture; architecture; biology; bio-technology; chemistry; computing studies; design - interior, industrial, graphics, fashion, product, landscape (2 units only may be counted); design and technology; engineering/physics; geology, Earth and/or environmental science; materials science; medicine/nursing/biomedical science; psychology; or similar fields which include processes of inquiry, designing and producing.

Human Society and Its Environment KLA

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander studies, Aboriginal languages; anthropology and/or Sociology; archaeology; Asian or Pacific studies; economics/business studies; cultural studies; geography/environmental studies; government and citizenship; history; languages; legal studies; political science; studies of religion.

Creative and Practical Arts KLA

Dance including practical experience in choreography and performance in various dance styles appropriate for primary contexts; drama including experiential involvement in making and performing drama; music including performing (singing, playing and moving), listening and organising sound (composing) incorporating a range of repertoire and approaches; visual arts including art making and art history/theory; fine arts.

Personal Development, Health and Physical Education (PDHPE) KLA

Physical education studies; health studies; family studies; health promotion; human movement studies; nutrition education; sports science.

Applicants who are 12 credit points short of meeting the prerequisite for KLA discipline knowledge may be permitted to enrol in the relevant curriculum units provided they enrol concurrently in the appropriate prerequisite discipline unit or units. All prerequisites must be passed prior to or concurrently with Master of Teaching (Primary) candidature. Such prerequisite discipline units are in addition to the program of study in the Master of Teaching.

and

(b) satisfy the School of their suitability for teaching through the satisfactory completion of the Personal Statement for Initial Teacher Education Course Entry; and

(c) comply with the University's English Language Requirements for Courses in Education Accredited by the NSW Education Standards Authority.

Entry Requirements

Applicants for this program must hold a Bachelor's degree from a recognised higher education provider. Students who have English as an additional language and are admitted on the basis of an International English Language Testing System (IELTS) assessment, or an equivalent English language proficiency assessment, are only admitted if they have attained an overall score of 7.5 in IELTS Academic, with no score lower than 8.0 in speaking and listening, and no score lower than 7.0 in reading and writing.

The program provides professional preparation for teaching in primary school (Prep to Year 6) settings. It is designed for graduates from a non-education background wishing to teach in this context.
Entry Requirements

Applicants will need a completed Bachelor degree (or equivalent) that does not lead to teacher registration (with a minimum Grade Point Average (GPA) of 4.0 on a 7-point scale) with significant breadth of study to address the range of teaching areas expected by employers.

Applicants must also complete non-academic entry requirements to be eligible for this program.

The key learning areas include: The Arts; English; Health and Physical Education; Mathematics; Science; Humanities and Social Sciences and Technology. You can explore these key learning areas further on the Queensland Curriculum and Assessment Authority website.

Note: Successful completion of the Literacy and Numeracy Test for Initial Teacher Education (LANTITE) is not an entry requirement for this program. However, if you have achieved a 'satisfactory' result for one or more component of the Literacy and Numeracy Test for Initial Teacher Education (LANTITE) at another institution, the 'satisfactory' result can be carried across with your program application. You are not eligible to apply for a place in the program if one or more component of LANTITE remains at 'unsatisfactory' after two test attempts for that component. Griffith University does not support reset of LANTITE test attempts.

Entry Requirements

Research has shown that the most effective teachers are those who have academic capability, literacy and numeracy skills, and personal characteristics (non-academic capabilities). Entry to this program requires that applicants meet academic and non-academic criteria.

Academic qualifications

You must have completed a non-education bachelor's degree (AQF Level 7) or equivalent, with a minimum GPA of 4.0 from a recognised tertiary institution which includes the equivalent of at least one full-time year of study in areas relevant to one or more learning areas of the primary school curriculum.

Applicants from a non-English speaking background must attain an IELTS score of at least 7.5 with a minimum of 8.0 in speaking and listening and 7.0 in all other subtests. Refer to English language requirements

Personal statement requirement

As part of your application, you are required to complete an online questionnaire to demonstrate your motivation for, and understanding of, the program and profession. In the questionnaire, you will be asked to rank a series of statements in order of what you think is most to least important. You will also need to write a 600-1000 word personal statement on why you think you would make a great teacher, and why influencing the future appeals to you.

English language requirements

If English is not your first language, you also need to meet the minimum English language requirements for your chosen program. If you do not meet the minimum requirements, you may like to enrol in one of our English Language Programs.

Post admission requirements

During your studies, you must complete a minimum of 60 days of Supervised Professional Experience in a school setting under the supervision of a Queensland College of Teachers (QCT) registered teacher. Find more information on Supervised Professional Experience.

You must obtain a Blue Card (or link your existing Blue Card to USC) prior to commencing Supervised Professional Experience. Applications should be submitted at least 12 weeks prior to the SPE start date. View the Blue Card Fact Sheet for further information. Blue Cards are free-of-charge for Education students when applying through the School of Education at USC.

You will also need to successfully complete the Literacy and Numeracy Test for Initial Teacher Education students (LANTITE). Primary Teaching Courses overview

Primary teaching is dedicated to the early years of schooling. Seven to twelve year olds are given foundational skills and knowledge that will assist them for the rest of their lives. Postgraduate study offers students from varied backgrounds the chance to gain accreditation to teach primary education in Australia or overseas. It provides skills in child learning, literacy and mathematics preparation in conjunction with a host of education theory.

The field has an immense history spanning back thousands of years. The Middle Kingdom of Mentuhotep II played host to the first school in 2000 BCE. The old Sumerian saying, ‘he who would excel in the school of the scribes must rise with the dawn’ held true in these institutions; students of wealthy Egyptian merchants or temple officials worked tirelessly to learn writing. Institutions soon began teaching more than this, however. The Indian Vedic era of 1500 BCE saw the teaching of logic, mathematics and the sciences. The Zhou dynasty 500 years later taught students calligraphy.

Education systems are now specialised and cover a broad range of topics. Primary teachers expose students to a broad palette of knowledge, helping them develop into wiser adults.

Primary teaching is for those with a love of learning and seeing children grow. It is a rewarding career, where your inputs and passions could very well shape the lives of future contributors to society. If you’re the kind of person who can bear this responsibility with patience, passion for the craft and a watchful eye, primary teaching could be ideal for you.

Study pathway

Postgraduate study can be taken up to master level, with graduate certificates and diplomas being available for varying needs and study commitments.

Graduate certificates provide specialised learning opportunities, with each certificate focussing on a different discipline. Western Sydney University, for instance, provides a graduate certificate in both primary mathematics and primary science education. They also take only six months of full time study to complete or a year if part time, making them ideal for rounding off an existing knowledge of education.

Graduate diplomas provide a more broad skill set, generally featuring units in contemporary teaching issues, teaching principles, global education and lesson design. They take one year of full time study to complete, or two years part time. These programs tend to require an undergraduate degree, but it can be from any discipline.

Master degrees are ideal for gaining professional accreditation as a primary teacher despite coming from an entirely different discipline. These offer the chance to learn an abundance of teaching fundamentals specific to the primary age group. Institutions like the University of Newcastle provide in-depth units on curriculum design, diverse students, advanced literacy and numeracy studies, schooling in relation to society and much more. These programs take one and a half to two years of full time study to complete, with part time study taking up to four years.

Employment options

Primary teachers can seek employment in schools all around the country, with associations like the Australian Professionals Teachers Association being available to provide mentoring, advice and networking opportunities to professionals young and old. There are even associations for specific disciplines, such as the Australian Science Teachers Association. The interconnectedness of the profession is conducive of high employment and career development opportunities.
