Master of Radiology overview

Master level radiology courses are designed specifically for doctors. Aspiring technicians, sonographers or otherwise are advised to browse the extensive array of graduate certificates and diplomas in radiology here.

These courses are offered by the University of Melbourne and other prestigious institutions, tending to feature half-day seminars combining lectures and tutorials. Students will learn and improve upon a great variety of skills and knowledge, including angiography, computer tomography, anatomy and more. Other programs grant the option to undergo a research master, detailed below.

Coursework master

Most Master of Radiology programs are focussed on seminars, tutorials and lectures to better understand and complete a variety of coursework. The focus of these is on learning and adapting the skills of students rather than making academic contributions to the field.

Research master

Research master programs like those offered by the RMIT allow students to join active researchers in developing the fields of medical physics, nuclear medicine, projects in medical imaging and more. These programs take up 48 weeks of the year, with students being expected to commit at least four days per week to research full time.

Employment options

Graduates from coursework master programs are well suited to the employment options listed here. Those aspiring to work for Australian and New Zealand Society of Neuroradiology as a neuroradiologist are better equipped to do so, granted they have or are going to complete their residency in the field. These courses are excellent for refining and directing graduates’ knowledge toward fields like cardiovascular radiology, chest radiology and others depending on the program and institution chosen.

Scholarships and funding

Radiology-specific scholarships are rare, but general opportunities are always available, but tend to have specific types of students in mind. The Endeavour Scholarships and Fellows initiative is an example of this, granting travelling students partial funding. The Gallipoli Scholarship Fund is for students with a WWI soldier as an ancestor. These sorts of opportunities nearly always carry esoteric requirements beyond GPA, but they are quite numerous and varied.

Prerequisites and selection process

Applicants must meet numerous requirements to enter these programs. The University of Melbourne is one such example, requiring the following:

  • A bachelor degree in medicine
  • At least two years work experience as a practicing doctor
  • Acceptance to a Victorian hospital for a five year training program
  • Passed part one of the RANZCR exams
  • Two professional referees

These sorts of requirements are common across all institutions offering similar courses. Students considering this line of study are thereby advised to be certain of their commitment, as it is incredibly significant.
