Graduate Certificate or Diploma of Radiology overview

Graduate certificates in radiology are for professionals wishing to specialise in some way. The University of Adelaide offers courses to this end, providing graduates with improved knowledge of radiation management and safety. These tend to take six months to complete if undergone full time; the part-time study will take up to one year.

Graduate diplomas are similar in that they are more specialised, but take twice as long to complete at one year of full-time study. The University of Wollongong starts students with a brief look into clinical sectional anatomy and other fundamentals before allowing for more specific core and elective courses.

Employment options

Graduates from these courses tend to be doctors or other medical professionals already, but upon completion of these qualifications gain improved access to the list of employment options mentioned here. A graduate technician from the Charles Sturt University program would find themselves more capable sonographers, for instance. Doctors might find themselves more confident in neuroradiology, cardiovascular radiology or something entirely different depending on the program and institution they have selected.

Scholarships and funding

Graduates from certificate and diploma level programs have access to a number of general scholarship programs, with specialised programs being quite rare. The ECIG Scholarship Program or Gallipoli Scholarship Fund are some of the most accessible, making them a great way to secure partial funding should their requirements be met. Options like the Endeavour Scholarships and Fellows, for instance, require students to travel overseas to study and argue why their chosen institution is a sound choice.

Prerequisites and selection process

Graduate certificate courses require students to either have relevant experience in the field or a relevant bachelor degree. Graduate diplomas sometimes require two years of relevant work experience in addition to an undergraduate degree, so students are advised to check the requirements of their desired courses carefully.

Both certificates and diplomas are competitive, with many institutions checking for GPA to prioritise applicants.
