Entry Requirements

If you're interested in studying the Master of Teaching you'll need to meet the following requirements:

Domestic Students

The minimum entry requirements, for all students, is the completion of a Bachelor's degree in a non-education discipline at an approved tertiary education institute.

Additional pre-requisites:

Primary teaching proficiency

Your initial degree should contain a major or equivalent in one of the available teaching proficiency areas.

Secondary teaching specialisation

Completion of the secondary teaching stream requires two teaching specialisations. The first teaching specialisation requires a major or equivalent in one of the available teaching specialisations. The second teaching specialisation requires at least a minor or equivalent, including at least two units at second year (Intermediate) level or above. Some specialisations, such as Science, will required a major or equivalent.

Additional units

If your initial degree does not meet the requirements of a proficiency or specialisation, you may be offered the opportunity to complete additional undergraduate units either prior to or concurrently with your Master of Teaching in order to meet the requirements. Your offer letter will specify any additional units you will need to complete.

Non-Academic Capability Assessment Tool (NACAT)

All applicants are required to provide a non-academic personal statement which is used to assist in the selection of students into all Initial Teacher Education (ITE) courses at the University of Tasmania.

This statement is submitted through the Non-Academic Capability Assessment Tool (NACAT) after you have completed your application and is used in conjunction with your ATAR score (or equivalent alternative entry.) All applicants must satisfactorily complete the NACAT before they will be provided with an offer into the course.

Literacy and Numeracy Test for Initial Teaching Education.

Prior to undertaking their final Professional Experience placement, Master of Teaching students are required to complete the Literacy and Numeracy

Primary proficiencies:

Primary Proficiency area Discipline Study
English English studies (literature/textual) and may include studies in communications, creative writing, linguistics, media, or film.
Humanities & Social Sciences Humanities and social sciences with units drawn from Aboriginal studies, anthropology, archaeology, Asian or Pacific studies, business, civics, commerce, cultural studies, economics, geography, government, history, legal studies, philosophy, politics, psychology, religion studies, social communication and sociology.
Mathematics Pure or applied mathematics. Applicants with a Bachelor of Engineering or Bachelor of Accounting can receive the Mathematics proficiency.
Science Biology or chemistry or physics or environmental science or geology. Applicants with a Bachelor of Nursing or Bachelor of Medicine can receive the Science proficiency.
The Arts Visual arts, music, media art, theatre, or drama or dance.
Health & Physical Education (HPE) Physical education studies, health studies, health promotion, human movement studies, nutrition education, sports sciences.
Languages A single language including study of the spoken and written language.
Technologies Computing or computer technology.

Secondary: First teaching area

Specialisation Minimum Discipline Study for Teaching Area
English A major in English with at least three units of a strong core of textual studies including literature. Other units may include studies in communications, creative writing, linguistics, media studies, film studies, drama/performance arts studies.
Humanities & Social Sciences A major in humanities or social sciences drawn from areas such as Aboriginal studies, anthropology, archaeology, Asian or Pacific studies, civics, cultural studies, geography, government, history, philosophy, politics, psychology, religion studies, social communication and sociology. Business and Commerce can be paired with a second specialisation in Middle School Mathematics (or Mathematics where the requirement is met)
Mathematics A major in pure or applied mathematics that must include algebra and calculus. One unit only of statistics may be counted provided it is studied as a stand-alone unit. Engineering units may be considered upon review of unit statements for appropriate mathematical content.
Science A major in science including four units in a discipline (biology or physics or chemistry or earth and environmental science) including at least two units at 2nd year level or above. Engineering can be accepted for Science specialisation and MSM as second specialisation.
The Arts - Double Arts ** A major in one of drama or theatre, music, visual art or media art
The Arts A major in one of drama or theatre, music, visual art or media art

Native speakers of a language must hold an undergraduate degree and may obtain verification from an Australian university indicating that their level of competency in reading, writing, speaking, listening and culture is equivalent to the completion of a major in that language.

International Students

In addition to the entry requirements listed above, international students who are nationals of a country where English is NOT the official language, evidence of an IELTS or TOEFL test must be provided. The Master of Teaching requires an (IELTS) average of 7.5 with no band lower than 7.0 and Listening and Speaking at 8.0.
