Depending on your experience, there are three entry pathways to the Master of Educational Leadership.

One-year fast-track program

  • A four-year bachelor's degree or combined degree in education (including professional experience or practicum) equivalent to the qualifications required for graduate teacher status in NSW or other Australian jurisdictions, OR
  • A recognised bachelor's degree and a postgraduate teaching qualification (e.g., Graduate Diploma of Education or Master of Teaching) equivalent to the qualifications required for graduate teacher status in NSW or other Australian jurisdictions, OR
  • A bachelor's degree or equivalent qualification in a relevant discipline*, plus three years of relevant professional experience and development**.

1.5-year program

  • A bachelor's degree (or equivalent qualification) in a relevant discipline* with a record of academic achievement equivalent to a UNSW credit average of 65%, OR
  • A bachelor's degree (or equivalent qualification) in any discipline with a record of academic achievement equivalent to a UNSW credit average of 65% plus three years' relevant professional experience** and development, OR
  • An honours degree or graduate diploma (or equivalent qualification) in any discipline with a record of academic achievement equivalent to a UNSW credit average of 65%.

Two-year program

  • A bachelor's degree (or equivalent qualification) in any discipline with a record of academic achievement equivalent to a UNSW credit average of 65%.

* "Relevant disciplines" may include arts, humanities, media, psychology, social work, business, economics, languages, linguistics, communications, policy studies, behavioural sciences, and social sciences.

** "Relevant professional experience" may include roles such as teacher, trainer, coach, educational developer, languages teacher, lecturer, teacher of English to speakers of other languages, educational leader, and educational administration.

Credit transfer
You can apply to have credit points from previous studies applied to the Master of Educational Leadership. The maximum credit transfer you can apply for is 50% (24 units of credit, or three courses). Recognised courses must have been completed within the last ten years, provided the content is relevant and/or meet BOSTES requirements.

Alternative entry pathways

If you don't meet the entry requirements for the Master of Educational Leadership, you may be eligible for the Graduate Certificate in Education or the Graduate Certificate in Educational Leadership. These can provide a stepping stone to the Master of Educational Leadership.

English language requirements

You may be asked to provide evidence of your English proficiency to study at UNSW depending on your educational background and citizenship. English language skills are vitally important for coping with lectures, tutorials, assignments and examinations - this is why UNSW requires a minimum English language competency for enrolment.

2-year program

A bachelor's degree (or equivalent qualification) in any discipline with a record of academic achievement equivalent to a UNSW credit average of 65%.

Adjustment Factors


We offer a range of adjustment factor schemes that reward students for academic performance and extra-curricular achievements. These schemes also take into account a range of personal and educational disadvantages that may have affected your studies.

HSC Plus
This scheme rewards students who perform well in Year 12 subjects that are relevant to their preferred UNSW degree. You may be awarded up to five points.

Elite Athletes, Performers and Leaders (EAPL)
This program recognises achievements in the areas of sport, academia, leadership and music at an elite level. You may be eligible for up to five points.

Educational Access Scheme (EAS)
Factors such as illness, financial hardship, language difficulties or attending a particular school can mean you don't always get the best possible marks in Years 11 and 12. If one of these situations applies to you, submit an application for the Educational Access Scheme (EAS) via UAC. Eligible students can receive between 1 and 10 points towards their chosen UNSW degree.

Admission pathways

The Faculty of Engineering Admission Scheme (FEAS) is a possible alternative admission pathway for the admission of domestic undergraduate students to UNSW Faculty of Engineering degree programs, including the BSc Computer Science and the BSc Food Science (Hons), who do not meet the published Guaranteed Entry selection rank. Entry isn't dependent upon a degree related to the creative disciplines, given that the programs aim to enable practitioners from a wide range of industry sectors to integrate visualisation, simulation and immersive environments into their work contexts.

Reduce the duration of your degree

The Master of Simulation and Immersive Technologies which is usually 11 courses or 1.7 years full time can an be shortened by the equivalent of 5 elective courses to a minimum of 6 core courses. This could be completed in as little as 2 terms or 0.7 years if undertaken full time.

Moving from Graduate Certificate to Masters
Students in the Graduate Certificate of Simulation & Immersive Technologies who achieve a weighted average mark (WAM) of 65/100 at the end of their study may choose to transfer into the full Master of Simulation, and Immersive Technologies program. This means that if you maintain a credit average grade in your study in the Graduate Certificate, you can continue into a full Masters program without having to hold a Bachelors degree.

Entry requirements

Admissions to the standard 2-year program requires the following:

  • A three year undergraduate degree equivalent to a standard Australian bachelor degree in a discipline including at least three mathematics courses, and a minimum 65% average*.
  • Completion of a 3 year BSc in Computer Science or Bioinformatics (or cognate discipline) at UNSW or equivalent, and a minimum 65% average*.
  • Completion of the Graduate Diploma in Information Technology, and a minimum 65% average*.
  • Completion of the Graduate Certificate in Computing, and a minimum 65% average*.

*Qualifications from non-211 Chinese Universities will require a 70% average.

Recognition of prior learning

You may be eligible for up to 72 Units of Credit depending on your background:

For the Commerce component, up to 24 Units of Credit may be awarded based on your previous Business studies (at Bachelor level or higher).

For the Information Technology component, up to 48 Units of Credit may be awarded:

You'll be given 48 Units of Credit If you have a 4 year software or computer engineering degree or the equivalent, accredited under the Seoul Accord, that includes:

  1. a final year/capstone design or research project (the equivalent of 2 semesters or 3 terms of study),
  2. a project management course, and
  3. at least two computing courses covering data structures and algorithms (or work experience with sufficient experience to data structures and algorithms)

You'll be given 24 Units of Credit if you have a 4 year software or computer engineering degree or the equivalent, that is not accredited, and includes:

  1. a final year/capstone design or research project (the equivalent of 2 semesters or 3 terms of study)
  2. a project management course
  3. at least two computing courses covering data structures and algorithms (or work experience with sufficient experience to data structures and algorithms)

You'll be given 24 Units of Credit if you have a 3 year Bachelor of Computer Science degree or the equivalent, accredited under the Seoul accord, that includes :

  1. a final year/capstone design or research project (the equivalent of 2 semesters or 3 terms of study)
  2. a project management course
  3. at least two computing courses covering data structures and algorithms
  4. three or more years professional work experience in a role such as Software Engineer, Software Developer, Software Architect, Data Analyst, Machine Learning Engineer, Senior Applications Engineer, or Data Engineer you will be given 24 Units of Credit

Elite Athletes, Performers and Leaders (EAPL)
This program recognises achievements in the areas of sport, academia, leadership and music at an elite level. You may be eligible for up to five points.

Educational Access Scheme (EAS)
Factors such as illness, financial hardship, language difficulties or attending a particular school can mean you don't always get the best possible marks in Years 11 and 12. If one of these situations applies to you, submit an application for the Educational Access Scheme (EAS) via UAC. Eligible students can receive between 1 and 10 points towards their chosen UNSW degree.
