The Master of Teaching (Primary) is a two-year graduate entry initial teacher education program for pre-service primary teachers.
Entry Requirements

A candidate shall:

(a) hold an AQF Level 7 Bachelor degree, or an AQF Level 7 Bachelor degree and an AQF Level 8 or 9 postgraduate qualification, with a GPA of at least 3.50 in which they have completed the equivalent of one full academic year or eight units of study in a discipline area or discipline areas relevant to one or more of the following Key Learning Areas KLAs):

English KLA

Communications, creative writing, English literature; language studies (English), linguistics, literature studies, media studies (ie the theoretical study of media or where the product is a literary text).

Mathematics KLA

Pure or applied mathematics; other studies of mathematics that are relevant to the central concepts, modes of enquiry and structure of the content/discipline(s) (only one unit of statistics may be counted); engineering units may be considered upon review of unit statements for appropriate mathematical content.

Science and Technology KLA

Agriculture; architecture; biology; bio-technology; chemistry; computing studies; design - interior, industrial, graphics, fashion, product, landscape (2 units only may be counted); design and technology; engineering/physics; geology, Earth and/or environmental science; materials science; medicine/nursing/biomedical science; psychology; or similar fields which include processes of inquiry, designing and producing.

Human Society and Its Environment KLA

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander studies, Aboriginal languages; anthropology and/or Sociology; archaeology; Asian or Pacific studies; economics/business studies; cultural studies; geography/environmental studies; government and citizenship; history; languages; legal studies; political science; studies of religion.

Creative and Practical Arts KLA

Dance including practical experience in choreography and performance in various dance styles appropriate for primary contexts; drama including experiential involvement in making and performing drama; music including performing (singing, playing and moving), listening and organising sound (composing) incorporating a range of repertoire and approaches; visual arts including art making and art history/theory; fine arts.

Personal Development, Health and Physical Education (PDHPE) KLA

Physical education studies; health studies; family studies; health promotion; human movement studies; nutrition education; sports science.

Applicants who are 12 credit points short of meeting the prerequisite for KLA discipline knowledge may be permitted to enrol in the relevant curriculum units provided they enrol concurrently in the appropriate prerequisite discipline unit or units. All prerequisites must be passed prior to or concurrently with Master of Teaching (Primary) candidature. Such prerequisite discipline units are in addition to the program of study in the Master of Teaching.

(b) satisfy the School of their suitability for teaching through the satisfactory completion of the Personal Statement for Initial Teacher Education Course Entry; and

(c) comply with the University's English Language Requirements for Courses in Education Accredited by the NSW Education Standards Authority.

The Master of Teaching (Secondary) is a graduate entry initial teacher education program.
Entry Requirements

A candidate shall:

(a) hold a relevant AQF Level 7 Bachelor degree of a recognised Australian University or tertiary institution (or overseas equivalent as assessed by Australian Education International - National Office of Overseas Skills Recognition (AEI-NOOSR)), with a minimum GPA of 3.50; and

(b) satisfy the School of their suitability for teaching through the satisfactory completion of the Personal Statement for Initial Teacher Education Course Entry..

Applicants' undergraduate (and appropriate postgraduate) studies must include units meeting the NESA subject content requirements for their intended teaching area/s in the secondary school curriculum areas, as detailed below.

First teaching area

Candidates in their undergraduate (and appropriate postgraduate) studies will have successfully undertaken the equivalent of three-quarters of a year 0.75 Equivalent Full Time Study Load - EFTSL) of discipline study, usually comprising sequential units taken over three years. In most programs, this requirement equates to six units, with no more than two units at first-year level and no fewer than two units at third-year level.

Additional teaching area/s

Candidates wishing to be qualified to teach an additional or second secondary teaching area (for flexibility of employment) are generally required to have successfully undertaken the equivalent of half a year (0.5 EFTSL) of discipline study, usually comprising sequential discipline study taken over two years. In most programs, this requirement equates to four units, with no more than two units at first-year level. The University assesses applicants' eligibility for teaching areas based on the NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) Subject Content Knowledge Requirements.

Candidates need to pass 24 credit points (cp) in curriculum methods units. To teach English, Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, Earth and Environmental Science, Investigating Science, Physics or Music only, you study 4 units (24 cp) of curriculum methods in the teaching area. To qualify to teach in two different areas, you study 12 cp in each area. Students qualifying to teach Computing or Agriculture are an exception and only need to undertake 18 cp in total of curriculum methods units.

Applicants who are 12 credit points short of meeting the discipline prerequisite for a specific teaching area may be permitted to enrol in the relevant curriculum unit provided they enrol concurrently in the appropriate prerequisite discipline unit or units. All discipline prerequisites for curriculum units must be passed prior to or concurrently with Master of Teaching (Secondary) candidature. Such discipline prerequisite units are in addition to the program of study in the Master of Teaching and incur an additional cost.

Curriculum Specific Guidelines for First Designated Teaching Area

Agriculture:

A major in agriculture in an area such as agricultural science; agricultural technology; horticulture; agronomy; primary industries; rural science; including studies of plants and animals, animal care, agricultural enterprises and chemical safety.

Business Studies/Commerce:

Major in business studies, including at least one unit of finance or accounting, and one unit of business management and remaining units drawn from: business law (Australian/English); economics; human resource management; industrial relations; marketing; business management; finance or accounting.

Computing:

Information Processes and Technology - A major in computing or computing technology including at least two units that develop skills in information and communications technologies and information systems eg database design including relational databases and communication systems/networking, coding and systems management, and skills in designing and producing digital products including non-visual programming languages.

Software Design and Development - A major in computing or computing technology or equivalent discipline including at least two units that develop skills in the design and development of software eg programming in a computer-based language and system analysis, design, development and testing.

Drama:

A major in drama including all of the following: performance; production; theory and preferably Australian drama. Drama studies must be developed as a discrete discipline. Vocationally-oriented courses are not recognised as equivalent.

Economics/Commerce:

Major in economics.

English:

Major in English with at least three units of a strong core of textual studies including literature. Other units may include studies in: communications, creative writing, linguistics, media studies, film studies, and drama or performance arts studies.

Geography:

Major in geography including units in physical and human geography. Units in Earth and Environmental Science may be considered upon review of units for appropriate discipline knowledge.

History:

Ancient History - Major in history in areas such as ancient history; archaeology; and historiography (including one unit in medieval or modern history).

Modern History - Major in history in areas such as Australian history; contact and Aboriginal history; early modern history; historiography; and modern history (including one unit in ancient history or medieval history).

Languages:

A major in a language including study of the spoken and written language. Units counted towards the major must be above an introductory level of study. Where the language is an Aboriginal language there will be specific cultural requirements. Native Speakers of a language must hold an undergraduate degree and may obtain verification from an Australian university indicating that their level of competency in reading, writing, speaking, listening and culture is equivalent to the completion of a major in that language.

Legal Studies:

Major in law or legal studies including the Australian legal system.

Mathematics:

Major in pure or applied mathematics that must include at least one unit of algebra and calculus. The major may include other studies of mathematics that are relevant to the central concepts, modes of enquiry and structure of the content/discipline(s) (only one unit of statistics may be counted). Engineering units may be considered upon review of unit statements for appropriate mathematical content.

Mathematics/Physics: (First Teaching Area Only)

A minor in mathematics, including at least one unit of algebra and one unit of calculus, and a minor in physics (only one unit of statistics may be counted). Engineering units may be considered upon review of unit statements for appropriate mathematical or physics content.

Music: (First Teaching Area Only)

Major in music, including all of the following: musicological study (music history and analysis) in a range of musical styles; periods and genres with a strong component of contemporary and western art music: compositional techniques; music performance studies (a minimum of two years of music performance studies; and preferably Australian music. The study of Music and music practice must be developed as a discrete discipline. Vocationally-oriented courses are not recognised as equivalent.

Sciences: (First Teaching Areas only)

Biology - A major in science including four units in biology.

Chemistry - A major in science including four units in chemistry. Engineering units may be considered upon review of unit statements for appropriate chemistry content.

Earth and Environmental Science - A major in science including three units in Earth or environmental science and one unit in biology.

Investigating Science - A major in science including two units in general, interdisciplinary or applied science and one unit in each of chemistry, physics, earth or environmental science, and biology. Engineering units may be considered upon review of unit statements for appropriate physics and/or chemistry content.

Physics - A major in science including four units in physics. Engineering units may be considered as physics upon review of unit upon review of unit statements for appropriate physics content.

Society and Culture:

A major including at least one unit of sociology and the remaining units drawn from: Aboriginal studies, anthropology, Asian or Pacific Studies, civics, cultural studies, government, history, philosophy, politics, studies of religion, social communication, sociology.

Studies of Religion:

A major in studies of religion including comparative religions and culture.

English as an Additional Language/ Dialect (EAL/D):

A major in discipline knowledge relevant to EAL/D such as linguistics and/or language studies that provide a grounding in the English language, how it works and a very high level of competency in spoken and written English, and intercultural communication.

English Language Requirements

A candidate shall comply with the University's English Language Requirements for Courses in Education Accredited by the NSW Education Standards Authority.

1. Admission to candidature in the degree of Doctor of Education (EdD) may be approved by the Committee only when the Head of School has:

(a) certified that the necessary facilities and appropriate support for the applicant undertaking the proposed EdD program are available; and

(b) nominated an appropriate Principal Supervisor and Co-supervisor(s) in accordance with Rule 8.

2. The Committee may, on the recommendation of the relevant Head of School, admit to candidature into the course for the degree of Doctor of Education (EdD) an applicant who:

(a) satisfies the HDR coordinator that they have relevant experience in an education institution or in education services delivery; and

(b) has a degree of Master (AQF Level 9) or equivalent with at least 25% research component; or

(c) has a degree of Bachelor Honours (AQF Level 8) with at least upper second class honours or equivalent; or

(d) has a degree at AQF Level 8 or AQF Level 9 or equivalent and has adequate research preparation since graduation. Adequate research preparation may be gained by an approved academic course, professional training, durng an occupation or through peer reviewed publications; or

(e) has previously undertaken work of sufficiently high standard towards a higher degree by research (AQF Level 9 or 10) in the University but not have submitted it for any degree; and

(f) has produced documented evidence of capacity to undertake work at EdD level; and

(g) meets the University's English for Admission Requirements for Higher Degrees by Research; or

(h) in instances where other types of relevant evidence for English language competency in a research context are offered by the applicant (eg the applicant has within the past five years authored or co-authored research publications in the English Language), the HDR Coordinator may present a case to the Committee arguing for the validity and acceptability of this evidence; and

(i) has completed and had approved by the Committee an EdD research proposal.

Entry Requirements

1.1. Admission to candidature in any doctoral program may be approved by the Head of School or delegate (for example Higher Degree Research (HDR) Coordinator) under the oversight of the Associate Dean Research (ADR) when the School:(a) has certified it has the necessary facilities and appropriate support for the applicant undertaking the proposed PhD program; and

(b) has nominated an appropriate Principal Supervisor and Co-supervisor(s) in accordance with Rule 5.

1.2. The Head of School or delegate (for example HDR Coordinator) under the oversight of the ADR may admit to candidature in a doctoral program an applicant who: (a) has a degree of Master (AQF Level 9) with at least a 25% research component undertaken at a sufficiently high standard, or equivalent; or

(b) has a degree of Bachelor with at least upper second class Honours (AQF Level 8), or equivalent; or

(c) has a degree at AQF Level 8 or AQF Level 9 and had adequate research preparation since graduation. Adequate research preparation may be gained by an approved academic course, professional training, during an occupation or through peer reviewed publications; or

(d) has previously undertaken work of sufficiently high standard towards a higher degree by research (AQF Level 9 or equivalent) at UNE but not submitted it for any degree; and

(e) has produced documented evidence of capacity to undertake work at the PhD level; and (including any requirements for Doctor of Philosophy (Innovation) and Doctor of Philosophy (Creative Practice));

(f) has completed an appropriate research proposal for the doctoral program for which they are applying (see further below)

1.3 Upgrade from research Master to Doctoral program.

HDR candidates may apply to the Graduate Research Committee to upgrade from a research Masters program (AQF Level 9) as stated in Rule 1.2(d) to a doctoral program by providing the following:

(a) evidence of refereed research publications or reviews of at least two thesis chapters, or equivalent component of a portfolio or creative work.

(b) the reviews shall be carried out by two reviewers, one who may be internal and one who must be external to UNE. Each reviewer should have a doctoral degree or equivalent.

(c) any application for an upgrade with evidence attached must be endorsed by the Principal Supervisor and Head of School or delegate (for example HDR Coordinator) under the oversight of the ADR and forwarded to Research Services, after confirmation of candidature or equivalent with sufficient candidature left to continue on into the PhD.

1.4 The time of candidature in the Masters program will be deducted from the candidature of the doctoral program. For example, for domestic candidates, if six months has been undertaken in the Masters program, then thirty months will remain for the doctoral program.

1.5 All applicants must meet the UNE?s English Language Requirements for Admission Rule.

Doctoral programs- specific requirements

1.6 Doctor of Philosophy (Innovation)

In addition to meeting the requirements for entry to UNE Doctoral Programs, to be admitted into candidature in the Doctor of Philosophy (Innovation) (PhD. I) an applicant must:

(a) fulfill both academic and industry/profession requirements;

(b) have a minimum of five (5) years relevant experience in an industry/profession; and

(c) wherever possible, but mandatory in cases where criteria in Rule 1.2 has not been met, demonstrate he/she has successfully undertaken prior contextualised research activity in a relevant industry/profession at the equivalent of Masters level. Such demonstrated prior contextualised research could include previous research surrounding the development and implementation of new knowledge; policy research; market research; research association with commercialisation activities; action research; workplace evaluations; evaluation of new knowledge and/or innovation adoption; change management, monitoring and evaluation; and/or any other evidence of research and development capacity deemed sufficient and relevant by the PhD. I Coordinator.

1.6.1. International candidates will need to reside in Australia during the first 12 months of candidature while they complete the PhD.I Research Learning Program. The following three (3) years of candidature they will return to and reside in the country where their Innovation project and Innovation project Portfolio research is being conducted. Candidates are required to return to Australia for intervals of time sufficient to complete their portfolio as agreed between the candidate, supervisors and Head of School or delegate (for example HDR Coordinator) under the oversight of the ADR.

1.6.2. All candidates will complete the PhD.I in two phases. Phase 1: the PhD.I Research Learning Program, which must be completed prior to commencement of Phase 2: the Innovation project Portfolio. Progression to Phase 2 is contingent on successful completion of Phase 1, as demonstrated through Confirmation of Candidature.

1.7 Doctor of Philosophy (Creative Practice)

Projects for this course must include two components:

i. A creative work

ii. A written exegesis

1.7.1 Primary Supervision is based in the School of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences, co-supervision can be from across UNE and industry.

1.7.2 Projects can only be undertaken in creative areas for which UNE can provide appropriate supervision and resources to support the project.

1.7.3 An applicant must demonstrate he/she has successfully undertaken prior contextualised research activity in a relevant area of creative practice at the equivalent of research Masters level, and has appropriate skills and knowledge to undertake work in this field at PhD level.

(b) has an AQF Level 8 Graduate Certificate or Graduate Diploma in a relevant discipline and has adequate relevant preparation since graduation. Adequate relevant preparation may be gained by an approved academic course, professional training during an occupation or through peer reviewed publications; or

(c) hold an AQF Level 9 Master of Education; and

(d) for all the above has attained a minimum grade point average of 5.0; or

(e) satisfies the Higher Research Committee, upon the recommendation of the School by means of other qualifications and relevant experience of adequate preparation for candidature.

For MEd(Res) (Special Education) it is expected that an applicant has at least two years special education work experience post graduation. In addition, an applicant will be required to have passed at least one unit in special education.

(a) has certified it has the necessary facilities and appropriate support for the applicant undertaking the proposed Master of Philosophy (MPhil) program; and

(b) has nominated an appropriate Principal Supervisor and Co-supervisor(s) in accordance with Rule 5.

1.2. The Head of School or delegate (for example HDR Coordinator) under the oversight of the ADR may admit to candidature in a MPhil program an applicant who:

(a) has a degree of Bachelor with at least second-class Honours (AQF Level 8) or equivalent in an appropriate field of study; or

(b) has a degree at AQF Level 7 or equivalent and has adequate relevant preparation since graduation. Adequate relevant preparation may be gained by an approved academic course, professional training, during an occupation or through peer reviewed publications; and

(c) has completed and had approved by the relevant School officers an MPhil research proposal.

1.3 All applicants must meet the UNE's English Language Requirements for Admission Rule.

Master of Philosophy programs- specific requirements

1.4 Master of Philosophy (Innovation)

In addition to meeting the requirements for entry to the Master of Philosophy program, to be admitted into candidature in the Master of Philosophy (Innovation), an applicant must:

(a) fulfill both academic requirements for entry into an MPhil, and the industry/profession requirements, outlined below;

(b) have a minimum of five (5) years of relevant experience in an industry or profession; and

(c) demonstrate successful undertaking of prior contextualised research activity in a relevant profession/industry. Such research activity could include previous research surrounding the development and implementation of new knowledge; policy research; market research; research association with commercialisation activities; action research; workplace evaluations; evaluation of new knowledge and/or innovation adoption; change management; monitoring and evaluation; and/or any other evidence of research and development capacity deemed sufficient and relevant by the PhD.I Coordinator.

1.4.1 All candidates will complete the MPhil (Innovation) in two phases. Phase 1: completion of the Research Learning Program, which much be completed prior to commencement of Phase 2: the Innovation project Portfolio. Progression to Phase 2 is contingent on successful completion of Phase 1, as demonstrated through Confirmation of Candidature.

1.4.2 Projects can only be undertaken in areas for which UNE can provide appropriate supervision and resources to support the project.

1.5 Master of Philosophy (Creative Practice)

Projects for this course must include two components:

i. a creative work; and

ii. a written exegesis

1.5.1 Primary Supervision is based in the School of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences, Co-supervision can be from across UNE and industry.

1.5.2 Projects can only be undertaken in creative areas for which UNE can provide appropriate supervision and resources to support the project.

1.5.3 An applicant must demonstrate that they have successfully undertaken prior contextualised research activity/experience in a relevant area of creative practice.
