Graduate Certificate or Diploma of Criminology overview

Graduate certificates in criminology provide students with a basic understanding of science. Courses like those offered by Bond University provide knowledge on forensic criminology, politically motivated violence and many other elective units to ensure students receive a broad scope of knowledge. These courses tend to take six months of full-time study to complete, or a year part-time.

Graduate diplomas offer a more comprehensive understanding of criminology. The University of Sydney and others provide the chance to learn about youth crime, policing and forensic psychology in addition to specialist knowledge of their choosing. These diplomas take a year of full-time study to complete or two years part-time.

Employment options

Students with these qualifications have the opportunity to broaden their skillset with a master degree or attempt one of the specialisations listed here. Private investigators, for instance, make ample use of the skills learned throughout a criminology degree. Employers like Lyonswood Investigations and Forensics are always on the lookout for skilled critical thinkers, high deductive reasoning and deep criminological knowledge. These are also traits required of great detectives, who are employed for the public good.

These employment options are most accessible to students who have studied a Master of Criminology, which students can choose to enter upon completion of either a diploma or certificate.

Scholarships and funding

General funding opportunities are available to those completing certificates or diplomas. The Endeavour Scholarships and Fellows initiative and Gallipoli Scholarship Fund are good examples of these, as they are accessible to any discipline at the cost of having very specific prerequisites. The latter requires applicants to have a descendant who fought in WWI, for instance, in addition to a sound GPA. Interested students are therefore advised to examine these requirements before applying.

Prerequisites and selection process

Both graduate certificates and diplomas only require a prior bachelor degree to enter, with some courses requiring a credit average GPA (65%). It is advantageous however to have a background in psychology or another relevant discipline to fully understand course content. It is even a prerequisite when enrolling at institutions like Bond University to have come from a cognate discipline, so prospective students are advised to check if this applies to their desired university.
