The University of New England is committed to maintaining its strong research culture, underpinned by high research training standards. The Master of Rural Science Rules provide the framework for one of the University's AQF Level 9 awards.
Entry Requirements

1. Admission to candidature in the degree of Master of Rural Science (MRurSc) may be approved by the Committee only when the Head of School has:

(a) certified that the necessary facilities and appropriate support for the applicant undertaking the proposed MRurSc program are available; and

(b) nominated an appropriate Principal Supervisor and Co-supervisor(s) in accordance with Rule 4.

2. The Committee may, on the recommendation of the relevant Head of School, admit to candidature into the course for the degree of Master of rural Science (MRurSc) an applicant who:

(a) has a degree of Bachelor with at least second class honours (AQF Level 8) or equivalent; or

(b) has a degree at AQF Level 7 or equivalent and has adequate relevant preparation since graduation. Adequate relevant preparation may be gained by an approved academic course, professional training, during an occupation or through peer reviewed publications.

3. All applicants must meet the University's English Language Requirements for Admission Rule.

Honours in Science is an intensive year-long program that enables students to research a topic they are passionate about.
Entry Requirements

1. A candidate shall:

(a) hold an AQF Level 7 Bachelor of Science from the University of New England or an equivalent AQF Level 7 Bachelor qualification in a relevant discipline; and

(b) have achieved a GPA of 5.5 or better in the undergraduate degree; or a credit average in at least 24 credit points at 300-level in Science units from an area releated to the major/discipline area.

2. Admission to candidature shall be determined by the Bachelor of Science Honours Course Coordinator in consultation with the relevant Head of School.

3. Readmission to the Bachelor of Science with Honours will only be permitted with the approval of the Course Coordinator and will only be considered where a completely new research topic is proposed.

  • Academic admission requirements (Band 8) may be satisfied through completion of one of the following:

    • Bachelor degree in a cognate discipline; or
    • Where accepted, equivalent prior learning, including at least five years relevant professional experience.
  • English competency requirements may be satisfied through completion of one of the following:

    • IELTS Academic Overall band minimum score of 6.5 (no individual band less than 6.0);
    • Bachelor degree from a country specified on the English Proficiency Bands page;
    • Successfully completed 0.375 EFTSL of study at postgraduate level or higher at an Australian higher education provider (or equivalent);
    • Where accepted, equivalent prior learning, including at least five years relevant professional experience; or
    • Other tests, courses or programs defined on the English Proficiency Bands page.

The Master of Philosophy (Science) opens the door to the world of scientific research. MPhil (Science) students become independent researchers of exceptional quality. They learn to manage extensive projects, use advanced scientific tools and write reports fit for publication.
Entry Requirements

To be eligible for admission to the Master of Philosophy (Science), you must have completed the equivalent of one of the following in a subject area related to your proposed research area:

  • bachelor's degree with a minimum overall credit average in the senior level unit(s) of study relevant to the proposed area of research or,
  • master's degree or,
  • University of Sydney Graduate Diploma in Science with a final mark of 80.

These criteria constitute the minimum requirements for eligibility and do not guarantee admission. That remains at the discretion of the relevant supervisors and departments, and access to supervision remains highly competitive. The University must certify that there are sufficient supervisory and other resources and facilities available to enable your candidature to be completed successfully.

Inherent requirements

In addition to the academic requirements set out in the Science Postgraduate Handbook, you may be required to satisfy a number of inherent requirements to complete this degree. Example of inherent requirement may include:

  • confidential disclosure and registration of a disability that may hinder your performance in your degree;
  • confidential disclosure of a pre-existing or current medical condition that may hinder your performance in your degree (e.g. heart disease, pace-maker, significant immune suppression, diabetes, vertigo,);
  • ability to perform independently and/or with minimal supervision;
  • ability to undertake certain physical tasks (e.g. heavy lifting);
  • ability to undertake observatory, sensory and communication tasks;
  • ability to spend time at remote sites (e.g. One Tree Island, Narrabri and Camden);
  • ability to work in confined spaces or at heights;
  • ability to operate heavy machinery (e.g. farming equipment);
  • hold or acquire an Australian driver's licence;
  • hold a current scuba diving license;
  • hold a current Working with Children Check;
  • meet initial and ongoing immunisation requirements (e.g. Q-Fever, Vaccinia virus, Hepatitis, etc.)

You must consult with your nominated supervisor regarding any identified inherent requirements before completing your application.
