Entry Requirements

To be eligible for admission to a research Master degree, an applicant must hold:

(a) a Bachelor degree (AQF Level 7) with a Grade Point Average of 5.0 or higher on a seven point scale from a recognised higher education institution; or

(b) a Bachelor Honours degree (AQF Level 8) Class IIB from a recognised higher education institution; or

(c) a record of qualifications and/or professional research experience deemed to be equivalent to the standard of (a) or (b) as may be approved by the Research Degrees Committee, or the Chairperson acting on behalf of the Committee.

The prior study must be in an area of study relevant to the discipline area of the Master degree. If the prior study has not included an appropriate preparation in research methodology, the candidate will be required to undertake an appropriate research methodology course, as specified by the relevant Head of School, as part of their candidature.

The admission requirements for a specific Master degree may include additional requirements, such as a Bachelor degree in the relevant discipline, professional registration, a specified number of years of professional practice, or other requirements indicative of a suitable preparation to undertake a research program at Master level. Additional requirements should be discussed with your proposed supervision team prior to applying.

Entry Requirements

To be eligible for admission:

Applicants must hold a relevant 3-year Bachelor degree (AQF Level 7) that contains at least one year, or the equivalent, of full-time studies in social and behavioural sciences. This is the minimum entry requirement as set out by the ASWEAS guidelines (2019).

If an applicant's prior degree has not specifically addressed the above, they may be required to undertake additional foundational study as determined by the School of Social Science (usually the Program Coordinator of Master of Social Work (Qualifying)).

To be accepted into the program, international students who have not completed a Year 12 or equivalent secondary school level qualification or higher qualification in the English language consistent with the requirements for admission to AQF Level 9 degree course in Australia must have a minimum score of 7.0 or higher in each component (listening, reading, writing and speaking) of the Academic International English Language Testing System (IELTS) test upon application.

Applicants must complete a Personal Statement Form (up to 500 words) detailing the following:

  • What is your motivation to choose a career pathway into Social Work and what are the qualities you bring
  • How do your previous studies and experience align with the degree

Applicants may also be required to attend an interview.

Post admission requirements

A student's enrolment in field education will be conditional upon the following:

* the student's eligibility for a Blue Card at the time of the first enrolment in the program
* maintenance of that eligibility throughout the entire program
* acquisition of a Blue Card prior to commencement of field education cable

You must have a completed recognised bachelor degree and have passed one year (8 units) of full-time studies in social sciences such as:

  • studies in society
  • human development
  • education
  • human services
  • law
  • media and communication
  • nursing
  • psychology
  • sociology
  • urban and regional planning.

This course is not designed for students who already have a bachelor degree in social work.

Overseas qualifications

QUT will consider equivalent overseas qualifications for admissions purposes. If you have tertiary qualifications from countries where English is not the standard language of instruction you must provide evidence of English language proficiency.

We also recognise not all overseas social work qualifications will meet the professional requirements to gain membership with the Australian Association of Social Workers (AASW). We will consider applications from overseas qualified applicants for this course.

If you are a qualified social worker in your country of residence you should also contact the Australian Association of Social Workers (AASW) to determine any study you may need to undertake to be eligible for membership in Australia. This assessment may indicate that you won't need to complete the full two years of study and you may be eligible for some credit for prior learning (advanced standing) towards your study.

English language proficiency

We require students to demonstrate they can speak write read and comprehend academic English to a specified standard.

Our English proficiency requirements for this course are:

  • IELTS (Academic): 7.0 or better overall with no subscore below 7.0
  • PTE: 65 or better overall with no subscore below 65
  • TOEFL (IBT): 98 or better overall with listening and reading subscores of 24 or better a writing subscore of 27 or better and a speaking subscore of 23 or better
  • Cambridge English Score: 185 or better overall with no subscore below 185

The test must have been completed within 2 years prior to the proposed course start month.

Selection ranks

You will be considered solely on the basis of selection ranks from your prior degree studies plus any postgraduate studies you may have undertaken. Other qualifications and experiences may be allocated selection ranks for entry to other QUT courses but will not be considered for this course.

This course is not designed for students who already have the equivalent of a Bachelor in Social Work. Applicants who are qualified Social Workers in their country of residence should also contact the AASW to determine the study they may need to undertake to be eligible for membership in Australia. This assessment may indicate that it will not be necessary for you to complete the full two years of study and you may be eligible for some advanced standing towards your study.
