Become a secondary school teacher for the 21st century. As a secondary school teacher, you'll have a crucial role to play in the development of young Australians.
Entry Requirements

Applicants require a bachelor degree or equivalent qualification that includes at least a major study in one approved secondary teaching area (equivalent to one year full time equivalent study) and a minor in at least one other recognised teaching area (equivalent to half a year of full time study). Both undergraduate and postgraduate prior study can be considered in your teaching area(s) method(s) assessment. For approved teaching areas, please visit the Victorian VCE study design and ACARA subject areas.

Students will also require a valid Working with Children Check from the appropriate state authority. A Police Check may also be required by a school prior to a placement. For a list of each state's requirements, see the careforkids website.

CASPer suitability tool
From 2018, under the new AITSL and government Initial Teacher Education (ITE) requirements, all students applying to ITE courses across Australia will need meet suitability for teaching (non-academic selection) criteria as a part of course entry criteria.

1.5-year program entry requirements

You must have a recognised bachelor degree (or higher qualification) in any discipline.

1-year program entry requirements

You must have one of the following recognised:

  • bachelor honours degree in teaching or education; or
  • bachelor degree in any discipline plus graduate certificate in teaching or education; or
  • graduate diploma (or higher qualification) in teaching or education; or
  • bachelor degree in teaching or education followed by at least two years full-time (or equivalent) work experience in teaching or education.

If you qualify for the 1-year program you will be automatically granted 48 credit points of general advanced standing towards the option units. This will be confirmed in your offer letter.

July intake

1.5 year program

  • A recognised bachelor degree (or higher qualification) in any discipline with a minimum GPA of 4.0 (on QUT's 7 point scale).

1 year program

  • A recognised bachelor degree in any discipline with a minimum GPA of 4.0 (on QUT's 7 point scale) and a completed recognised Graduate Certificate (or higher) in the field of Education with GPA of 4.0 (on QUT's 7 point scale); or
  • A recognised bachelor degree in the field of education with a minimum GPA of 4.0 (on QUT's 7 point scale) plus a minimum of two years full-time (or equivalent) relevant work experience in teaching or education. Students applying on the basis of work experience must submit a detailed CV position details and employment statements.
