This program is for graduates with non-Education bachelor degrees wanting to qualify to teach disciplines in secondary schools. For admission, your bachelor degree disciplines must align with the current subject offerings of Queensland schools.
Entry Requirements

Research has shown that the most effective teachers are those who have academic capability, literacy and numeracy skills, and personal characteristics (non-academic capabilities). Entry to this program requires that applicants meet academic and non-academic criteria.

Academic qualifications

Applicants must have completed a non-Education Bachelor's degree (AQF Level 7), or equivalent, with a minimum GPA of 4.0 from a recognised tertiary institution. In addition, applicants must satisfy the discipline study requirements of at least one-quarter of a degree in a nominated first teaching area and one-sixth of a degree in a nominated second teaching area. Teaching Area One and Teaching Area Two must be from contrasting subject areas or different discipline areas and contain no more than 2 introductory courses in each area.

Applicants from a non-English speaking background must attain an IELTS score of at least 7.5 with a minimum of 8.0 in speaking and listening and 7.0 in all other subtests. Refer to English language requirements

Personal statement requirement

As part of your application, you are required to complete an online questionnaire to demonstrate your motivation for, and understanding of, the program and profession. In the questionnaire, you will be asked to rank a series of statements in order of what you think is most to least important. You will also need to write a 600-1000 word personal statement on why you think you would make a great teacher, and why influencing the future appeals to you.

After you have submitted a QTAC application for this program, QTAC will contact you with further information about the written statement and how to complete your application.

If English is not your first language, you also need to meet the minimum English language requirements for your chosen program. If you do not meet the minimum requirements, you may like to enrol in one of our English Language Programs.

Post admission requirements

Students must complete a minimum of 60 days of Supervised Professional Experience in a school setting under the supervision of a Queensland College of Teachers (QCT) registered teacher. Students must obtain a Blue Card (or link their existing Blue Card to USC) prior to commencing supervised professional experience. Applications should be submitted at least 12 weeks prior to the SPE start date. Blue Cards are free-of-charge for Education students when applying through the School of Education at USC.

Overseas qualifications

We will consider equivalent overseas qualifications for admissions purposes. If your previous studies were completed in a country other than Australia Canada New Zealand Republic of Ireland United Kingdom or the United States of America or undertaken in a language other than English you must provide evidence of your English language proficiency.

If you've achieved a 'satisfactory' result for one or more components of the Literacy and Numeracy Test for Initial Teacher Education (LANTITE) at another institution the 'satisfactory' result can be carried across with your admission application. You need:

  • a completed recognised 3-year bachelor degree (or higher) not in a course leading to teacher registration in Australia or New Zealand
  • a minimum grade point average (GPA) of 4.00 or higher (on QUT's 7-point scale)
  • successful completion of three-quarters of a year (or full-time equivalent) of higher education study in Psychology or a completed recognised bachelor degree in: Psychology Behavioural science (Psychology) Psychological science counselling social work or human services.

Social education (geography)

You need:

  • a completed recognised 3-year bachelor degree (or higher) not in a course leading to teacher registration in Australia or New Zealand
  • a minimum grade point average (GPA) of 4.00 or higher (on QUT's 7-point scale)
  • successful completion of three-quarters of a year (or full-time equivalent) of higher education one or more of the following areas: Geology and environmental study geographical information systems geography natural resource studies agriculture forestry horticulture lands parks and wildlife management natural resource studies viticulture

Social science education (history)

You need:

  • a completed recognised 3-year bachelor degree (or higher) not in a course leading to teacher registration in Australia or New Zealand
  • a minimum grade point average (GPA) of 4.00 or higher (on QUT's 7-point scale)
  • successful completion of three-quarters of a year (or full-time equivalent) of higher education study in history.

Technologies Education (Design)

You need:

  • a completed recognised 3-year bachelor degree (or higher) not in a course leading to teacher registration in Australia or New Zealand
  • a minimum grade point average (GPA) of 4.00 or higher (on QUT's 7-point scale)
  • successful completion of three-quarters of a year (or full-time equivalent) of higher education study in one or more of the following areas: Architecture Design Fashion urban town regional planning.

Technologies Education (Digital Solutions)

You need:

  • a completed recognised 3-year bachelor degree (or higher) not in a course leading to teacher registration in Australia or New Zealand
  • a minimum grade point average (GPA) of 4.00 or higher (on QUT's 7-point scale)
  • successful completion of three-quarters of a year (or full-time equivalent) of higher education study in one or more of the following areas: animation games and interactive entertainment information technology interactive and visual design multimedia.

Visual arts education

You need:

  • a completed recognised 3-year bachelor degree (or higher) not in a course leading to teacher registration in Australia or New Zealand
  • a minimum grade point average (GPA) of 4.00 or higher (on QUT's 7-point scale)
  • successful completion of three-quarters of a year (or full-time equivalent) of higher education study in visual arts with a minimum of:
  • one eighth of a year (1 QUT unit) in history or theory; and
  • one eighth of a year (1 QUT unit) in studio practice; or

Successful completion of any one of the following QUT courses:

  • Bachelor of Design (Fashion)
  • Bachelor of Design - International (Fashion)
  • Bachelor of Fine Arts (Visual Arts)
