Entry Requirements

For admission to the Master of Clinical Dentistry program, an applicant must:

  • hold a Bachelor degree in Dentistry or equivalent (five-year program);
  • hold current registration as general dental practitioner in Australia;
  • have a minimum of two years of clinical experience post-graduation from a registrable dental degree;
  • meet English language proficiency requirements (see below for details);
  • successfully complete an interview process.

This program builds on the technical skills developed in the Bachelor of Dental Health Science and is the final two years of professional training needed for eligibility to apply for registration as a Dentist.
Entry Requirements

The Master of Dentistry is only open to students who have successfully completed the Bachelor of Dental Health Science (1577) or the Bachelor of Oral Health in Dental Science (1259) at Griffith.

Students who wish to delay entry into the Master of Dentistry may do so for no more than one year. Students who delay entry cannot be guaranteed a place in the Master of Dentistry. Entry will be subject to available dental operatories (dental chairs) and to passing a clinical and written examination.

Master of Dentistry overview

Master qualifications in dentistry can either focus on a specialised area of dental practice, or give you a broad advancement of your skills as a dentist.

Broad programs will give you skills and knowledge to safely and effectively undergo advanced dental procedures. Alternative focuses of master degrees in dental practices could take the form of dental surgery, clinical dentistry, research in the field of dentistry, and dentistry in the spectrum of  public health.

Coursework masters

Coursework masters in dentistry will have pre-selected subjects designed to improve your skills in dental practice and increase your knowledge of advanced procedures. Depending on your learning institution, there may be some room for you to choose electives in your area of interest.

Research masters

While less common, research masters of dentistry will allow you to further both your research skills and your knowledge in the field. Students will undertake a research project and be primarily assessed on their findings. This type of master qualification is ideal for those who wish to work in dental research or academia.

Employment options

Dentists with a postgraduate degree are more likely to have full-time employment and earn a higher salary than those practicing with only a bachelor’s degree in dentistry.
