Entry requirements

A recognised bachelor's degree (or equivalent qualification) in any field. The program enables practitioners from a wide range of industry sectors, so entry does not require a degree related to the creative disciplines.

Applicants who do not have a bachelor's degree may apply for admission into the Graduate Certificate based on a minimum 5 years industry experience. To be considered, applicants must provide a digital portfolio (PDF, website, etc.) that includes:

A CV detailing a minimum of 5 years industry experience

5-10 examples of professional achievement (such as examples of work in design, visualisation, simulation, immersive technologies, or descriptions of initiatives they have led, patents, awards, etc.)

A 2 page statement that explains: their specific strengths and achievements in their field; how they see visualisation, simulation and immersive design impacting their discipline; and their motivations for joining the program, and how they believe the program will enhance their career

The digital portfolio will be assessed on a case-by-case basis by Art & Design staff. Students in this category who complete the Graduate Certificate with a WAM of 65 may apply to articulate to the Master of Visualisation, Simulation, and Immersive Design.

Recognition of Prior Learning

Reduce the duration of your degree

You can shorten the duration of your program by applying for RPL for credit. This may include 5 years or more industry experience, formal or informal learning, and approved UNSW Art & Design Short Courses. RPL is usually considered when applying to join a program.

The Graduate Certificate in Simulation and Immersive Technologies which is usually 4 courses or 0.7 years full time can an be shortened by the equivalent of 2 elective courses to a minimum of 2 core courses. This could be completed in as little as 1 term or 0.3 years if undertaken full time.

Moving from Graduate Certificate to Masters

Students in the Graduate Certificate of Simulation & Immersive Technologies who achieve a weighted average mark (WAM) of 65/100 at the end of their study may choose to transfer into the full Master of Simulation, and Immersive Technologies program. This means that if you maintain a credit average grade in your study in the Graduate Certificate, you can continue into a full Masters program without having to hold a Bachelors degree.

Entry requirements

Students must have completed the UNSW Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of International Studies or Bachelor of Social Science or other recognised Level 7 qualification with a major in a stream offered in the program. Students in a double degree must have completed 144 UOC including all requirements for the Arts, International Studies or Social Science component. Entry to Honours requires a WAM of 70 or higher (or equivalent) in the stream(s) seeking to be further studied. It is subject to resources and the approval of the Head of School in which the stream(s) is/are based.

The conferral of the honours degree for double degree students is subject to students completing all requirements of the double degree. Students who subsequently withdraw from their double degree after the completion of honours will only be conferred the honours degree if they have met all requirements for the single degree.

We offer a range of adjustment factor schemes that reward students for academic performance and extra-curricular achievements. These schemes also take into account a range of personal and educational disadvantages that may have affected your studies.

HSC Plus
This scheme rewards students who perform well in Year 12 subjects that are relevant to their preferred UNSW degree. You may be awarded up to five points.

Elite Athletes, Performers and Leaders (EAPL)
This program recognises achievements in the areas of sport, academia, leadership and music at an elite level. You may be eligible for up to five points.

Educational Access Scheme (EAS)
Factors such as illness, financial hardship, language difficulties or attending a particular school can mean you don't always get the best possible marks in Years 11 and 12. If one of these situations applies to you, submit an application for the Educational Access Scheme (EAS) via UAC. Eligible students can receive between 1 and 10 points towards their chosen UNSW degree.

Master of Actuarial Studies (Extension)

To be eligible for this program, you must have a recognised bachelor degree (or equivalent qualification) with a substantial component of mathematics, statistics, econometrics or actuarial studies, with a credit average, as determined by the UNSW Business School.

Applicants are expected to have a mathematics background equivalent to a full year of calculus and linear algebra at first-year university undergraduate level.

Entries are also open to students with background in related disciplines including financial engineering, data science, data engineering, physics, engineering, any related quantitative field.

Recognition of prior learning or professional recognition

Advanced standing, or recognition of prior learning is credit granted for experience and prior studies that are relevant to the program. It may be granted for courses covered in an undergraduate program, or the examinations of the Actuaries Institute (Australia), the Institute of Actuaries (UK), or the Society of Actuaries.

If you aren't eligible for advanced standing where you have relevant prior learning, you may be able to take some substitution courses, so that you aren't learning material you have already covered.

If you need to improve your English skills before you start your degree, UNSW College's Academic English Programs are for you. The programs are suitable for various English levels and help you prepare for university studies and life in Australia.

To be eligible for this program, you must have a recognised bachelor degree (or equivalent qualification) with a substantial component of mathematics, statistics, econometrics or actuarial studies, with a credit average, as determined by the UNSW Business School.

Applicants are expected to have a mathematics background equivalent to a full year of calculus and linear algebra at first-year university undergraduate level.

Entries are also open to students with background in related disciplines including financial engineering, data science, data engineering, physics, engineering, any related quantitative field.

Recognition of prior learning or professional recognition

Advanced standing, or recognition of prior learning is credit granted for experience and prior studies that are relevant to the program. It may be granted for courses covered in an undergraduate program, or the examinations of the Actuaries Institute (Australia), the Institute of Actuaries (UK), or the Society of Actuaries.

If you aren't eligible for advanced standing where you have relevant prior learning, you may be able to take some substitution courses, so that you aren't learning material you have already covered.

Additional selection criteria

All domestic applicants*^ who wish to study an undergraduate law double degree at UNSW need to sit the Law Admission Test (LAT), including those:

  • enrolled in their final year of secondary schooling (Year 12 HSC or equivalent)
  • who have already completed their secondary schooling (e.g. those on a gap year)
  • who are currently studying at another university and wish to apply to transfer to Law & Justice
  • students in Year 11 who wish to sit the LAT before their HSC year (LAT results are valid for two years)

Adjustment Factors


We offer a range of adjustment factor schemes that reward students for academic performance and extra-curricular achievements. These schemes also take into account a range of personal and educational disadvantages that may have affected your studies.

HSC Plus
This scheme rewards students who perform well in Year 12 subjects that are relevant to their preferred UNSW degree. You may be awarded up to five points.

Elite Athletes, Performers and Leaders (EAPL)
This program recognises achievements in the areas of sport, academia, leadership and music at an elite level. You may be eligible for up to five points.

Educational Access Scheme (EAS)
Factors such as illness, financial hardship, language difficulties or attending a particular school can mean you don't always get the best possible marks in Years 11 and 12. If one of these situations applies to you, submit an application for the Educational Access Scheme (EAS) via UAC. Eligible students can receive between 1 and 10 points towards their chosen UNSW degree.

This scheme is open to students in Years 11 and 12 who attend Gateway schools. It significantly adjusts the ATAR requirements for your preferred UNSW degree and provides you with an early conditional offer to UNSW.

We offer entry programs for Indigenous Australians, including the Indigenous Preparatory Programs and the Indigenous Admission Scheme (IAS). The entry pathway program you apply for will depend on the degree you want to study.
