The UNSW Master of Information Technology is a two-year full-time course that will empower you with the skills to make a difference through technology. You'll gain a broad-based IT education, regardless of your level of computing experience.

UNSW provides two entry points to the Master of IT depending on your cognate background. This provides a structured and supportive option for students with a non-cognate background, while enabling students with cognate backgrounds earlier flexibility in their course selection. Both entry points equate to the same duration of 2 years (96 UoC), and differ only in the order and structure of core foundation courses.

*Note: while a background in maths is not required for either entry, it is strongly recommended for all Master of IT students.

Students with a cognate background:

Admissions to the standard 2-year program requires the following:

  • A 3 year Bachelor Degree (AQF Level 7 equivalent) in a cognate discipline with a minimum 65% average*.


    OR

  • Successful completion of the UNSW Graduate Certificate in Computing (7543), UNSW Graduate Certificate in Infromation Technology (7546), OR UNSW Graduate Diploma in Information Technology (5546) with a 65% average.

Students with a non-cognate background:

Admissions requires the following:

* A 3 year Bachelor Degree (AQF Level 7 equivalent) in any discipline with a minimum 65% average*.

Successful applicants will be offered entry to the Master of Information Technology via the Graduate Certificate in Information Technology/Master of Information Technology pathway. Students can articulate to the Master of Information Technology after passing 18 UOC of foundational courses. The total study duration is the same as the entry point for students with a cognate background (2 years/ 96 UoC). There is no separate application required for this pathway, applicants with non-cognate backgrounds must apply for the Master of Information Technology to be considered for this entry as a packaged offer.

Currently, there are no Commonwealth Supported Places available for the Graduate Certificate component of this pathway.

  • Graduate Certificate in Computing

Admissions requires the following:

* A 3 year Bachelor Degree (AQF Level 7 equivalent) in any discipline with a minimum 65% average*.

After successful completion of four courses students have two options: Graduate from the Graduate Certificate; OR Prior to graduation, apply to articulate to the Graduate Diploma or Master of Information Technology with credit for the completed courses.

Students should pay careful attention when selecting their Graduate Certificate courses to ensure that they align with the requirements for the major of their preference if they intend on articulating into the Graduate Diploma or Master of Information Technology.

There are Commonwealth Supported Places available for the Graduate Certificate in Computing, if you intend on articulating into the Master of Information Technology a separate application will be required on the completion of the Graduate Certificate program.

*Qualifications from non-211 Chinese Universities will require a 70% average

Recognition of Prior Learning (Credit Transfer)

UNSW recognises that many students have professional experience or relevant previous studies. If you have worked in a relevant industry or have relevant previous study experience, you may be eligible for credit points that would enable you to complete your Master of Information Technology in as little as one year, or another accelerated option listed below dependent on your previous study and experience.

You may be asked to provide evidence of your English proficiency to study at UNSW depending on your educational background and citizenship. English language skills are vitally important for coping with lectures, tutorials, assignments and examinations - this is why UNSW requires a minimum English language competency for enrolment.

If you're completing an Australian Year 12 qualification (e.g. NSW HSC or equivalent), you do not need to provide anything extra to prove your proficiency. Your qualification will be used as evidence of your English proficiency.

If you do need to provide evidence of your English proficiency, this will be indicated in your application. You can prove this by providing evidence that you meet one or more of the following criteria:

    The UNSW Juris Doctor (JD) is a distinctive postgraduate degree that provides the basis for admission to legal practice in Australia, as well as a wide range of careers in government, business, legal and social policy and international relations.

    Entry requirements

    Entry into the UNSW JD is based on academic merit. Students must have completed a tertiary qualification at Bachelor, Masters or PhD level in a discipline other than law, or a degree in law from an overseas institution.

    Domestic Applicants

    UNSW offers domestic applicants both Commonwealth Supported Places (CSP) and full-fee places in the JD. CSP are offered to the most competitively ranked applicants and the remaining eligible applicants will be offered a full-fee place in the JD program. You should list both CSP and full-fee codes in your UAC preferences if you wish to be considered for both places. For further information on eligibility and academic merit required, please refer to the admission criteria.

    Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people considering the Juris Doctor may be assessed under the Indigenous Alternative Entry Scheme pathway. In addition to your UAC application please submit an Indigenous Alternative Entry Scheme application form.

    Admission pathways

    Indigenous entry into UNSW Law & Justice Juris Doctor program

    The Postgraduate Indigenous Entry Scheme for the Juris Doctor at UNSW is one of many support schemes to grow the number of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people entering the legal profession.

    You'll be part of a cohort of students that are engaged with social justice initiatives and driven to be the next leaders in legal practice.

    The scheme is competitive and students who best meet the selection criteria, outlined below, will be considered under the alternate entry scheme and have access to a Commonwealth Supported Place (CSP). The scheme is open to those who meet specific requirements.

    Transfer from a full-fee place to CSP (UNSW JD Awards)
    UNSW JD students enrolled in a full-fee place can apply to transfer to a Commonwealth Supported Place (CSP) after completing a minimum of 48 units of credit (UOC). Applications will be assessed on the results of your UNSW JD study only. Awards will be offered to those students with the highest overall JD WAM and a minimum WAM of 75.00 is required.

    The awards offer a fee reduction up to a maximum of the difference in fees between a full-fee place and a Commonwealth Supported Place for the remaining duration of the awardee's JD program.     Transfer from another university
    We welcome applications from law students wishing to transfer to the UNSW JD from other universities. You may be eligible for advance standing, however a maximum of 48 UOC (1 year full-time) may be awarded for completed law studies. Only completed Bachelors, Masters or PhD qualifications will be considered for admission purposes.

    Students who have completed more than 48 UOC may receive an exemption for the additional completed law subjects but no credit. This means they will have to choose elective law courses at UNSW to make up these additional UOC. Students should apply via UAC Postgraduate (also refer to the apply section below).

You may also be eligible for advanced standing.

    International applicants who have completed a tertiary qualification at Masters or PhD level in a discipline other than law or law from a different legal system, and have achieved an overall average of 70% may be assessed on a case-by-case basis.

    Mathematics Extension 1

    Adjustment Factors


    We offer a range of adjustment factor schemes that reward students for academic performance and extra-curricular achievements. These schemes also take into account a range of personal and educational disadvantages that may have affected your studies.

    HSC Plus
    This scheme rewards students who perform well in Year 12 subjects that are relevant to their preferred UNSW degree. You may be awarded up to five points.

    Elite Athletes, Performers and Leaders (EAPL)
    This program recognises achievements in the areas of sport, academia, leadership and music at an elite level. You may be eligible for up to five points.

    Educational Access Scheme (EAS)
    Factors such as illness, financial hardship, language difficulties or attending a particular school can mean you don't always get the best possible marks in Years 11 and 12. If one of these situations applies to you, submit an application for the Educational Access Scheme (EAS) via UAC. Eligible students can receive between 1 and 10 points towards their chosen UNSW degree.
