About this scholarship

Donor: An appeal was undertaken with the assistance of Sir Peter Derham and Mr Donald Gibb to create a fund in memory of the late Dr JHW Birrell.

The late Dr JHW Birrell OAM ISO MB BS (Melb) LLD Honoris Causa (Monash) FRACP FAMA, was born in 1924 and died in 2003. He was appointed as the Victorian Police Surgeon in 1957, and was a pioneer campaigner for road safety. In 2004 the University, with the assistance of Sir Peter Derham and Mr Donald Gibb, commenced an appeal for a fund in memory of the late Dr Birrell for the purpose of providing an annual scholarship in the field of traffic safety.

BENEFITS

An amount of approximately $5,000 will be awarded.

ELIGIBILITY

Any University of Melbourne student enrolled in an Honours or graduate program through the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences who is undertaking research in a field relevant to traffic safety. This could include research relating to bicycle safety and public transport.

SELECTION

The Scholarship is available to a student of a School or Department within the Faculty undertaking a research project, on a topic deemed by the scholarship selection committee to be relevant to traffic safety.

APPLICATION

Complete the attached application form and submit via email to the nominated address by December 1st. Two referee reports must also be submitted by the due date.

OUTCOME

The successful applicant will be notified by email within 12 weeks of the application due date.
