Admission to study postgraduate coursework at Deakin is based on recognition of your professional experience and previous qualifications.

Admission is based on:

Bachelor degree in the field of Education that is a recognised initial teacher qualification for the purposes of registration as a primary or secondary teacher in Australia AND sufficient prior study in the language for meeting specialist area guidelines of the VIT. (VIT guidelines: three quarters of a year of successful full-time higher education study in the language (major sequence in the language), or a statement of equivalence from an approved university)

This course is designed to broaden the skills of those working as registered teachers in primary and secondary schools, by adding a VIT-endorsed specialist teaching method area in Languages teaching to their existing teacher registration. A Masters level qualification in Education additionally offers relevant professional learning to teachers who seek to move into, or already occupy, leadership, coordination or specialist positions in school systems.

Course structure

The Master of Languages Teaching is typically 12 credit points.

The exact number of credit points you study depends on how much credit you receive as recognition of prior learning (RPL) - your professional experience and previous qualifications - which can save you time and money

To be awarded a Master of Languages Teaching, students are required to successfully complete the following:

Academic Integrity AAI018
4 credit points of compulsory core units (ETL706, ETL709, ETL710 and ETL716); and
8 credit points of study as a combination of research units and units from course electives list A in one of the following configurations:

Option 1:

2 credit points of research units - EDX701 and EDX707; and
6 credit points units from courses electives list A

Option 2 (PHD Pathway)

6 credit points of research units - EDX701, EDX712, EDX705 (2cps), EDX706 (2cps); and
2 credit points of units from course electives list A

Credit for prior study or work

The University aims to provide students with as much credit as possible for approved prior study or informal learning which exceeds the normal entrance requirements for the course and is within the constraints of the course regulations. Students are required to complete a minimum of one-third of the course at Deakin University, or four credit points, whichever is the greater. In the case of certificates, including graduate certificates, a minimum of two credit points within the course must be completed at Deakin.
