Highly effective arts and cultural managers need expertise in management, marketing and finance as well as leadership and innovation. These disciplines and skills are essential to the success of arts and cultural organisations if they are to be culturally vibrant and financially viable.

This course combines the structure of a business education with focused industry expertise from the arts and cultural sectors.

You'll develop strategic marketing skills relating to audience development, branding, market segmentation, promotions and e-marketing. Other areas of study include: event management, cultural policy and its context, strategic planning, volunteer management, fundraising, sponsorship and philanthropy, management of community creative processes, and managing entrepreneurial activity within the creative industries.

The course is led by staff with extensive practical experience in management and leadership in the arts and cultural sectors. You'll have the opportunity to engage with a range of industry representatives, gain exposure to the work of cutting edge practitioners and thinkers, and integrate your work and learning through work placement opportunities.

Entry requirements

Minimum admission criteria:

  • Bachelor degree or higher OR
  • two years of relevant work experience * OR
  • evidence of academic capability judged to be equivalent

This program prepares graduates for leadership roles across the range of cultural organisations including: performing arts, visual arts, festivals, community events, facilities, publishing houses, music venues, screen industries, cultural heritage and museums.

Course structure

To complete the Graduate Diploma of Business (Arts and Cultural Management), students must attain a total of 8 credit points of study comprising 6 credit points of core units, 2 credit points of elective units taken from a recommended list, plus completion of the compulsory 0-credit point unit, MAI010 Academic Integrity. Most units (think of units as 'subjects') are equal to 1 credit point.

Credit for prior study or work

The University aims to provide students with as much credit as possible for approved prior study or informal learning which exceeds the normal entrance requirements for the course and is within the constraints of the course regulations. Students are required to complete a minimum of one-third of the course at Deakin University, or four credit points, whichever is the greater. In the case of certificates, including graduate certificates, a minimum of two credit points within the course must be completed at Deakin.
