Entry will be based on performance in:

  • a Bachelor degree in the field of Education that is a recognised initial teacher qualification for the purposes of registration as a primary or secondary teacher in Australia AND
  • sufficient prior study in the language for meeting specialist area guidelines of the VIT. VIT guidelines: three quarters of a year of successful full time higher education study in the language (major sequence in the language), or a statement of equivalence from an approved university.)

This course broadens qualified teachers' career opportunities by adding a VIT-endorsed specialist teaching method in languages to their existing teaching qualification. A GradCert level qualification in education additionally offers relevant professional learning to teachers who seek to move into or already occupy, leadership, coordination or specialist positions in schools.

Course structure

Credit for prior study or work

The University aims to provide students with as much credit as possible for approved prior study or informal learning which exceeds the normal entrance requirements for the course and is within the constraints of the course regulations. Students are required to complete a minimum of one-third of the course at Deakin University, or four credit points, whichever is the greater. In the case of certificates, including graduate certificates, a minimum of two credit points within the course must be completed at Deakin.
