Graduate certificates and diplomas are an excellent way to gain time-efficient, fundamental knowledge of the field. They take six months to one year of full-time study respectively. Part-time options are always available at one year and two years respectively. Marine engineers can have success in a number of industries, including oil, gas, mining, the military and commercial fishing. Companies like Maritime Engineers and MG Engineering have divisions dedicated to each of these pursuits, making them ideal employers for marine engineers with any particular career path in mind.
There are a variety of scholarships available to postgraduate engineering students, although most are restricted to master and PhD students. Nevertheless, there are some good ones available to graduate certificate and diploma students, such as the APPEA Tony Noon Scholarship. This one requires some legwork, providing $3,000 to students with a demonstrable interest in upstream petroleum engineering in particular. The funding is given for attending conferences and travelling outside Australia with this in mind. Another example is the UNSW Student Exchange Engineering Award, providing students with $2,000 to study overseas.
In addition to these, general opportunities like General Sir John Monash Scholarships are frequently available. This one, in particular, is valued at a significant $65,000pa, given to students willing to undergo studies overseas and argue for why their chosen institution is worthy of their academic attention. Students must have completed a four year Bachelor of Engineering to enter these programs. They sometimes also have a GPA requirement of credit (65%), but this is rarely the case for these courses.
