PhD level project management is often studied under a Doctor of Philosophy, with project management as a major. The University of New South Wales and University of South Australia both do this; graduates from these courses contribute original research to the field and learn to implement their own findings.
Those who pursue PhD project management should find ample opportunity to both teach and research project management in either a fellowship or special purpose position. Although earlier degrees are better suited to work in the field, the PhD is an excellent way to further it.
PhDs majoring in project management are subject to a variety of general scholarship programs, but tend not to have any specifically targeted toward them. Curiously enough, the fact students are normally directed into a philosophy PhD opens them to scholarships in this field. The HEC-ECU PhD Scholarship, for instance, is specifically for Pakistani students undergoing a philosophy PhD. Similar opportunities are available for other nationalities of project management students taking this route.
There are numerous requirements for these programs, such as completing an honours level bachelor degree with demonstrable research capabilities. UniSA demands a combination of work experience, proven research ability and an honours degree to enter this program.
