There are currently four tertiary institutions offering a doctor of mathematics degree in Australia. All take around four years to complete studying full-time.

You can study a Doctor of Philosophy (Mathematical Sciences) at the University of Tasmania, a PhD in Mathematical Sciences at RMIT, or a Doctor of Philosophy at ANU in either mathematical sciences or straight science.

Employment options

Advancing your skills in mathematics opens up higher career paths in teaching, statistics and many different branches of science. Completing a PhD program shows that you can successfully implement research on a concept to completion.

Prerequisites and selection process

You should check with your institution to see the individual requirements for each course, but usually you will require a master's degree in mathematics, as well as a supervisory team and a proposed thesis topic.
