Graduate Certificate in Teaching (Secondary Education)

Our fast-tracked secondary teaching course provides an introduction to the principles and practices of education at secondary-school level.

While the Graduate Certificate in Teaching doesn't qualify you to teach in schools, it does open the door to a range of roles that support young adults in their learning. It also prepares you for the Master of Teaching (Secondary Education), which leads to teacher registration.

You'll graduate with skills and knowledge in these areas:

• education strategies to support and include students from diverse backgrounds
• teaching practices for literacy and numeracy education across the curriculum
• data analysis to monitor the effectiveness of teaching practices and student learning
• research methods for sourcing and understanding education resources.

As education experts, we understand how students learn best. We apply those principles when teaching you - assigning practical tasks that promote effective learning, such as creating real lesson plans. You'll receive support throughout the course from our dedicated staff.

This course provides a qualification for those who would like a career helping teenagers to learn, in roles where teacher registration is not required.

You'll graduate with skills and knowledge that let you work in a range of learning settings, including:

• activity programs for teenagers
• classroom support
• creative learning programs
• cultural support programs for young adults
• disability support
• tutoring
• youth training environments.

Once you have qualified, you can apply to enter a masters education course e.g. (Master of Teaching (Secondary Education), subject to meeting all entry requirements. The masters will allow you to apply for registration to teach in schools.

To complete the Graduate Certificate in Education (Secondary) students will be required to complete:

• 48 credit points Core units

If you have completed study with another university or institution and believe you are eligible to receive credit for skills and past study, you can apply for advanced standing.

Applications for advanced standing can be made after a discussion with your course chair or academic adviser.

Before applying, you should consider whether you also want to apply for:

• Special admission programs: Depending on your life circumstances you may be eligible for special consideration of your application.
• Advanced standing: If you have significant experience or studies elsewhere you may be eligible for credit for some units of your course and not have to undertake them.
