Graduate Certificate in Teaching (Primary Education)

Our online program provides an introduction to the principles and practices of teaching children.

While the Graduate Certificate in Teaching doesn't qualify you to teach in schools, it does open the door to a range of roles that support children in their learning. This primary teaching course also prepares you for the Master of Teaching (Primary Education), which leads to teacher registration.

During your study, you'll develop foundational knowledge in these areas:

• education concepts that underpin teaching strategies
• learning design that meets students' diverse needs
• practical approaches to teaching language and literacy (reading, writing, comprehension)
• models for teaching children maths (measurement, geometry, statistics and probability)
• research methods for sourcing and understanding education resources.

As education experts, we understand how students learn best. We apply those principles when teaching you - assigning practical tasks that promote effective learning, such as creating real lesson plans. You'll receive support throughout the course from our dedicated staff.

This course provides a qualification for those who would like a career helping children to learn, in roles where teacher registration is not required.

You'll graduate with skills and knowledge that let you work in a range of learning settings, including:

• teacher support
• holiday and after-school programs
• creative learning programs
• disability support.

Once you have qualified, you can apply to enter a masters education course e.g. Master of Teaching (Primary Education), subject to meeting all entry requirements. The masters will allow you to apply for registration to teach in schools.

To complete the Graduate Certificate in Education (Primary) students will be required to complete:

• 48 credit points Core units

If you have completed study with another university or institution and believe you are eligible to receive credit for skills and past study, you can apply for advanced standing.

Applications for advanced standing can be made after a discussion with your course chair or academic adviser.

Before applying, you should consider whether you also want to apply for:

• Special admission programs: Depending on your life circumstances you may be eligible for special consideration of your application.
• Advanced standing: If you have significant experience or studies elsewhere you may be eligible for credit for some units of your course and not have to undertake them.
