The Masters coursework program in Journalism, Media and Communications aims to produce experts, independent and entrepreneurial communicators. Designed for those wanting to promote and implement change across a range of social, environment, political and business settings, the course helps you to develop advanced analytical skills and professional-level communications expertise.

You will learn how to communicate visually and in writing to an advanced level, develop knowledge of the strategic and political communications fields and media industries, and produce and engage with traditional and emergent media platforms and practices.

Spend intensive periods in Hobart, study online or join weekly classes and supervision sessions learning how to communicate effectively and creatively, and to succeed as an independent media and communication producer and entrepreneur. This degree allows you to take advantage of the scientific, environmental, artistic and cultural industry links in Hobart and nationally.

Your Masters degree can be specifically tailored to your interests and expertise, whether they lie in advancing your research skills, or developing your creative practice online, in print or for screen. You will be taught by leading researchers and lecturers, who possess a broad range of industry experience. Your study will be supported by contemporary Media Lab facilities, equipment and technical know-how. Online learning prepares you for our intensive workshops, and fully online units will be available from 2015.

Entry requirements

Entry into a Master of JMC is dependent on your previous education and industry experience, and requires (in the case of international applicants) a level of English equivalent to a score of 7 on an IELTS test (with no individual band less than 6.5).

The TWO YEAR Masters degree (maximum 5 years for part-time study) is designed for students who wish to build on bachelor degrees in any field including, but not limited to, science, health, social work, arts, business or law to become professional and effective communications specialists. Applicants are required to hold a Bachelor degree (or equivalent) in any field.

The ONE YEAR Masters (maximum 2 years for part-time study) is designed for (a) graduates with significant relevant media industry experience who wish to update and enhance their skills in media and communications, while also undertaking a period of sustained research or creative practice on a related topic, or (b) graduates of an honours degree in Journalism, Media and Communications or equivalent, who wish to pursue further professional-focused study. Applicants are required to provide evidence of significant relevant media industry experience or to hold an honours degree in Journalism, Media and Communications (or equivalent).

To progress to the Masters Research Project (50cps), students are required to obtain a credit average in all coursework units. For students who have not achieved a credit average, but have successfully passed 100cps of coursework units, they may exit the MJMC and graduate with the GradDiPJMC.

International students who do not meet the requirements for direct entry at the Masters level can obtain direct apply for entry at Graduate Diploma or Graduate Certificate level and package this with an offer for entry to Masters. Progression from the Graduate Certificate or Diploma into a Masters requires a credit average. Total length of full-time study for the Master degree in this case remains two years.
