About this scholarship

A unique opportunity is available for an outstanding PhD scholar to conduct research into Viral Genomics with a particular focus on serious human respiratory infections and in particular, the molecular epidemiology and evolutionary dynamics of human respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) in Australia.

The Scholarship is funded by The University of Sydney School of Medicine. The successful applicant will be based in the Westmead Institute for Medical Research.

 Open to:

  • The Scholarship is offered subject to the applicant having an unconditional offer of admission or being currently enrolled in full-time studies in a PhD at the University of Sydney.
  • Applicants must undertake research into Viral Genomics with a particular focus on serious human respiratory infections and in particular, the molecular epidemiology and evolutionary dynamics of human respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) in Australia. 
  • Applicants must have completed at least one of the following:
    • First-Class Honours degree,
    • four-year Bachelor’s degree with an outstanding record of professional and/or research achievements since graduation, or
    • Master’s degree in a related field with a substantial research component.
  • Applicants must have skills, knowledge and experience in:
    • pathogen genomics,
    • phylogenetics, and
    • bioinformatics.
  • Applicants must be Australian Citizens, Australian Permanent Residents or New Zealand Citizens.

 Value and Duration: 

  • The Scholarship will provide an annual stipend allowance equivalent to the minimum Research Training Program (RTP) Stipend Rate for up to three years for a successful PhD recipient, subject to satisfactory academic performance.
  •   The successful recipient will also receive an additional allowance of $5,000 per annum for the duration of the scholarship.
  • The successful recipient may apply for an extension of up to 6 months.
