Postgraduate Research Scholarship in Energy Dissipation and Turbulence Characteristics of Hydraulic Jump

Background:

An opportunity is available for an outstanding PhD scholar in the area of energy dissipation and turbulence characteristics of hydraulic jump.

Open to:

Applicants must have an unconditional offer of admission for full-time studies in a Masters by Research or a PhD within the Faculty of Engineering and Information Technologies at the University of Sydney, and be willing to undertake research in the field of energy dissipation and turbulence characteristics of hydraulic jump.

Applicants must hold Honours degree (First Class or Second Class upper) or a Masters degree in Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, or related discipline with a substantial research component (or equivalent).

Applicants must demonstrate:

• excellent quantitative skills,
• a background in experimental methods in fluid mechanics and measurements in open channel flows,
• intermediate to advanced proficiency in (or a strong desire to become proficient in) Matlab and data acquisition toolbox (or LabVIEW), and 
• intermediate knowledge of CAD software such as Solidworks or AutoCAD.

Value and Duration:

For a PhD recipient, the Scholarship will provide an annual stipend allowance equivalent to the RTP rate (indexed to the RTP rate on January One each year) for up to three years, subject to satisfactory academic performance. The recipient may apply for an extension of up to 6 months.

For a Masters by Research recipient, the Scholarship will provide an annual stipend allowance equivalent to the RTP rate (indexed to the RTP rate on January One each year) for up to two years (unless the student converts to a PhD in which case Clause 10. a. will apply), subject to satisfactory academic performance. No extension is possible subject to Clause 10.a.

Academic course fees and Student Services and Amenities fees are also provided for a successful international applicant, for the following:

• PhD recipients will have their fees covered for twelve research periods with up to a two research period extension being possible.
• Masters by Research recipients will have their fees covered for eight research periods. No extension is possible.
