School of Nursing & Midwifery, Fremantle Campus
This 18-month postgraduate program provides the ideal educational environment for Registered Nurses who wish to become midwives. The full-time program combines theory, research and professional practice so that you can embark on a career in midwifery with confidence. Woman-centred care is the basis of this program, which reflects contemporary national and international best practice. You will benefit from small class sizes, a focus on pastoral care from staff and professional practice experiences in a variety of quality midwifery settings.
The following entry requirements apply to this program:
In the Graduate Diploma of Midwifery, a significantly high proportion of 'hands-on' professional practice includes quality experience with you as a part of the midwifery healthcare team. A variety of placements include public and private settings in both the city and rural areas, from large teaching hospitals to small healthcare centres. This quality professional practice experience enables graduates to be confident, competent and able to adapt quickly to the midwifery workplace.
This unique program, which follows the philosophy of 'woman-centred' midwifery practice, will enable you to develop a high level of critical thinking, technical competence and interdisciplinary teamwork skills. Your assessments are based on written assignments, tutorial presentations, case studies, various projects and examinations and professional practice assessment at the University and healthcare setting level. On graduation you will have fulfilled all necessary requirements of the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency, enabling you to register as a midwife with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia.
Full details of the program requirements are contained in the Program Regulations.
