Master of Nursing Practice

This course is not offered in 2021.

The Master of Nursing Practice is offered On Campus in full-time mode. Students participate in structured and timetabled learning activities.

Nursing plays a key role in health services across the world, and registered nurses work in a wide variety of settings. The Master of Nursing Practice equips graduates with the key knowledge and skills necessary for the practice of nursing. Students who successfully complete 5 trimesters of full-time study, graduate with a Master of Nursing Practice and are eligible to apply for registration as a Registered Nurse through the Australian Health Practitioner Registration Agency (AHPRA). The course gives graduates an appreciation of the value of life-long learning and a firm foundation for further study at a postgraduate level.

Units are offered in all three trimesters allowing students to complete the course in two calendar years if they wish.

All students are required to undertake clinical experience.

This is an approved Student Income Support course. Eligible students may apply for Youth Allowance or Austudy.

Note: This course is an entry-to-practice degree for individuals who have gained a non-nursing undergraduate degree in a health related area of study. It is not a postgraduate degree for individuals who are already nurses and who wish to undertake study to advance their practice or who wish to pursue a research pathway.

Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:

1. provide safe, thoughtful, creative, responsive and evidence-based nursing care at a beginning practitioner level;
2. analyse and evaluate assessment findings to apply advanced critical thinking and the appropriate knowledge and skills to the provision of nursing care to people in a variety of health care settings;
3. demonstrate an appreciation and respect of the rights of individual people to make choices regarding their own health and the care they receive;
4. demonstrate support, facilitative skills and advocacy for vulnerable people who are unable to make or implement choices for themselves by virtue of their condition;
5. exhibit an understanding of nurses' roles in the provision of primary health care and generate and implement education strategies for health and health promotion;
6. demonstrate the ability to apply advanced nursing knowledge and skills to act as a change agent within the health care system; and
7. maintain and extend their nursing knowledge and skills by a process of experiential learning, reading and research.
