About this scholarship

Applications are invited for the following scholarship leading to the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the School of Medicine.

Up to three PhD scholarships, linked to a Revolutionary Team Award Grant from Movember and the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia, are available for research investigating lipid metabolism in prostate cancer and the development of lipid-based disease biomarkers.

The projects will be undertaken in the Prostate Cancer Research Group, located in the Cancer Theme at the South Australian Health and Medical Research Institute. Headed by Associate Professor Lisa Butler, the group leads an international collaboration of scientists and clinicians based in Australia, the USA and Belgium, and is investigating how alterations in lipid metabolism can be used to improve prostate cancer diagnosis and treatment. The successful candidate(s) will be encouraged to participate in these collaborations and will have the opportunity to spend time overseas during their candidature, including at least one international conference.

The projects on offer range from molecular biology and tumour biology studies, to lipidomics and bioinformatics. The group utilises a number of pre-clinical model systems including cell lines, animal models and human tissue explants. More information on the projects.

Eligibility: Applicants must be Australian Citizens or permanent residents of Australia who are acceptable as candidates for a PhD degree at the University of Adelaide and hold a first-class Honours degree in a relevant science-related discipline.

Stipend: The scholarship will be for a 3-yr period with a stipend equivalent to the Research Training Program Scholarship ($26,682 per annum in 2017). If the student is successful in obtaining an Research Training Program Scholarship they will be eligible for a competitive top-up stipend ($10,000 per annum). It is likely to be tax exempt, subject to Taxation Office approval.
