Climate change, environmental degradation, and biodiversity loss present urgent, complex challenges to human health and to health systems. This new Graduate Certificate in Public and Environmentally Sustainable Health prepares you to meet these challenges by equipping you with foundational public health skills and specialised knowledge in environmentally sustainable health.

The Graduate Certificate is part of the new Master of Public and Environmentally Sustainable Health which is made up of three nested Programs. Upon completion of the courses for the Graduate Certificate, you may have the opportunity to progress to the Graduate Diploma and then to the Master-level award.

Entry requirements

The following criterion applies to students seeking admission to the Graduate Certificate in Public and Environmentally Sustainable Health:

  • Possession of a recognised three- or four-year Bachelor's degree in a related discipline which demonstrates the applicant's potential to undertake and complete study at AQF level 8 equivalence.

You may be required to demonstrate an ability to understand and communicate in both written and spoken English at a level adequate for the purpose of pursuing the program of study.

You will be introduced to contemporary public health issues, with a special emphasis on the challenges that climate change and environmental degradation pose to health and healthcare systems.

If you are interested in public health or health service delivery and want to shape an equitable, sustainable and healthy future, this program will equip you with the basic skills that you need. It is ideal for Australian and New Zealand university graduates who are interested in:

  • a career in public health
  • assisting with implementing environmental sustainability plans in the health sector, and/or
  • working in non-government and industry organisations seeking to align their business with broader public health and environmental sustainability requirements.

The Graduate Certificate will inform your current practice and can be applied in a wide range of professions.

Course structure

The Graduate Certificate introduces you to the basic principles and methods of public health, systems thinking and environmental sustainability. The program emphasises the collection and sources of routine public health and social data, epidemiology, biostatistics and communication skills. You will engage with a broad range of contemporary public health issues including the challenges that climate change and environmental degradation pose to health and healthcare systems. The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals are used as an integrating structure across the program.

You will complete four compulsory courses worth a total of 100 units of credit. These are listed below:

  • Contemporary Issues in Public Health and an Introduction to Systems Thinking
  • Scientific Literacy and Communication
  • Foundations of Epidemiology and an Introduction to Biostatistics
  • Environmental Sustainability and Health Care Systems
