Further Information

In July 2008, Universities Australia (UA) and the Government of the Republic of Chile established the ‘Chile-Australia Agreement on Human Capital Development Program’. The Agreement supports up to 500 fully funded Chilean Masters and PhD students to study in Australian universities each year over the next five years.

This program aims to improve Chile’s global competitiveness by strengthening its human capital development and the scope and quality of education, scientific and technological research and innovation.

Under the Bicentennial Fund, the Government of Chile will:

  • meet the cost of living expenses for scholarship holders, while they are enrolled in Australia
  • fund university tuition and fees for scholarship holders not granted funding from Australian universities
  • provide a roundtrip air ticket (economy class) from Chile to Australia for each scholarship holder
  • fund English language training courses in Chile for scholarship holders who do not meet the language entrance requirements
  • provide up to six months allowance for living expenses for scholarship holders who require full-time English language study
  • cover additional expenses of the scholarship holders and/or their dependents that the Chilean government might deem necessary.

For Chilean students interested in studying at Research level (Masters and PhD), RMIT will:

  • provide between three and six months of free English language courses to the scholarship holder, as required
  • provide a 20% discount on total tuition fees for postgraduate research study at Masters or doctorate level for each scholarship holder
  • provide scholarship holders access to postgraduate study in the following priority fields:
    • agriculture and food industry
    • biotechnology
    • education
    • energy
    • environmental issues
    • health
    • housing and public security
    • information and communication technologies
  • provide appropriate support to supervise and monitor scholarship holders
  • guarantee the placement of Bicentennial Fund Scholars (BFS), subject to their meeting the requirements and availability of supervisors
  • arrange pre-departure orientation, accommodation support and management of the individual student’s program of study
  • provide Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) while students are enrolled.
