Background

The Pearl Duncan Teaching Scholarships (previously the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Teaching Scholarships) were developed by the Department of Education, Training and Employment (DETE) to assist aspiring teachers of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander heritage to complete an approved pre-service teacher education program and make a difference in education.

In 2005 the scholarships were renamed the Pearl Duncan Teaching Scholarships in honour of Pearl Duncan, an Aboriginal educator who has dedicated her life to improving Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander participation in education.

Up to 15 scholarships are available. The scholarships are targeted at school leavers and undergraduate students who plan to undertake an approved full-time pre-service teacher education program. Mature age students can apply under the post-schooling category. Postgraduate students are eligible to apply to complete their Graduate Diploma in Education (or equivalent) to be eligible for teacher registration.
