Equity scholarships scheme

What you'll receive

You can only receive one of the monetary awards (scholarships and bursaries). If you're eligible for more than one, you'll receive the one with the highest value.

Semester 2

If you did not apply in Semester 1, or were unsuccessful, you could receive:

Domestic students:

• an Equity Scholarship of $1,750 for one semester or
• an Equity Bursary of $1,500 for one semester or
• a Faculty Equity Bursary of $1,500 for one semester
• An Equity computer. Please note you can only receive an Equity computer every two years (i.e. if you received one in Semester 1, 2020 or in 2019, you can't receive one in Semester 2, 2020).

International students:

• an Equity Bursary of up to $1,500 for one semester or
• a Faculty Equity Bursary of $1,500 for one semester
• An Equity computer. Please note you can only receive an Equity computer every two years (i.e. if you received one in Semester 1, 2020 or in 2019, you can't receive one in Semester 2, 2020).

If you received an Equity Bursary in Semester 1, you could receive:

Domestic students:

• an Equity Scholarship of $1,750 for one semester or
• a one-off payment of $500. You do not need to do anything to receive this payment as long as you are enrolled at QUT for Semester 2
• An Equity computer. Please note you can only receive an Equity computer every two years (i.e. if you received one in Semester 1, 2020 or in 2019, you can't receive one in Semester 2, 2020).

International students:

• a one-off payment of $500. You do not need to do anything to receive this payment as long as you are enrolled at QUT for Semester 2
• An Equity computer. Please note you can only receive an Equity computer every two years (i.e. if you received one in Semester 1, 2020 or in 2019, you can't receive one in Semester 2, 2020).

Eligibility

You must be:

• from a low-income background
• experiencing financial hardship.

We also take personal hardship into consideration when assessing applications. This includes:

• personal medical conditions
• disabilities
• dependents with special needs.

There are some guarantees with our Equity scholarship:

• If you're a commencing Smith Family Learning for Life student, you're guaranteed an Equity Scholarship of $1,750 if you start in Semester 2.
• If you're a commencing Q-Step Scheme student, you're guaranteed an Equity Scholarship of $1,750 if you start in Semester 2.
• If you're a commencing Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander student, you're guaranteed the Equity bursary of $1,500. You won't receive this bursary if you successfully apply for one or more Indigenous Commonwealth Scholarships.

Who can't apply

You can't apply if you're a:

• single-unit study student - studying an individual unit at QUT, but not enrolled in a QUT course
• cross-institutional student - enrolled in a course at another university, but studying specific units at QUT and receiving advanced standing towards your course at the other university
• International College (QUTIC) student - studying one of the pathway programs offered by our international college, including foundation courses, university diplomas and English language courses

How to apply

You can apply for Semester 2 scholarships until 9:00am Monday 20 July 2020.

We'll let you know whether your application was successful by early August 2020.

If you did not apply in Semester 1, apply via the online application form (see below).

If you applied in Semester 1, were unsuccessful, and would now like to be reconsidered for Semester 2, please provide full up-to-date documentation outlining your change in circumstances. You do not need to reapply using the online application form. Email your documentation to equityscholarships@qut.edu.au.

If you are a domestic student, received an Equity Bursary in Semester 1 and would now like to be reconsidered for an Equity Scholarship for Semester 2, please provide full up-to-date documentation outlining your change in circumstances. You do not need to reapply using the online application form. Email your documentation to equityscholarships@qut.edu.au.

Equity computers

There will be a limited number of computers available in Semester 2. These will be distributed to students in the most need. Please do not apply for a computer if you have a computer that is working satisfactorily.

All new applicants will be contacted shortly after submitting their Equity Scholarship application with instructions on how to apply for a computer.

Semester 1 Equity Scholarship applicants who did not apply for a computer will be contacted with instructions on how to apply for a computer in Semester 2.

Applicants who applied for a computer in Semester 1 but were unsuccessful will be automatically reconsidered in Semester 2.

Completing the application form

To apply, complete and submit the Equity Scholarships Scheme application form.

You only need to submit one application to be considered for all scholarships under the scheme, including the Indigenous Commonwealth Scholarships.

Important: only students who did not apply in Semester 1 need to complete this application form. If you applied in Semester 1 and would like to be reconsidered for an Equity Scholarship for Semester 2, email full up-to-date documentation outlining your change of circumstances to equityscholarships@qut.edu.au

You must supply all relevant supporting documents by the closing date for your application to be considered.

What happens next?

We will assess your application and score it against criteria, including your:

• individual financial situation
• income
• personal circumstances.

We allocate scholarships based on need. Students with the greatest need will receive the highest value scholarships. The number of scholarships available will determine the cut-off to receive a scholarship.

When will I know the outcome of my application?

If you applied and submitted all supporting documentation by 9am on 20 July 2020, we’ll let you know the outcome  by early August 2020.

Conditions

You must enrol in the semester you applied for. Before we pay your scholarship, we will check your enrolment status to ensure you are still enrolled and eligible.
