You must have one of the following:

  • A recognised bachelor degree (or higher qualification) in any discipline;or
  • A recognised diploma in any discipline followed by at least two years full-time (or equivalent) professional work experience in any field;or
  • Five years full-time (or equivalent) professional work experience in any field.

What you will learn

STEM education plays a significant role in inspiring and preparing learners for the jobs of the future.

This Graduate Certificate in Education (STEM In Education) encourages you to take a critical view of STEM in education as you reflect upon and evaluate your current practice. You will seek ways to transform your teaching and learning as you:

  • explore an interconnected approach to the interpretation construction enactment and assessment of STEM curriculum
  • identify and overcome the challenges faced in the enactment of innovative education practice
  • develop your professional network and relationships that will extend beyond the duration of your study.

Flexible delivery

This major is offered part time. Each of the units is delivered over a five- or six-week teaching period to enable full-time teachers to participate and integrate their study into their practice for real world outcomes.

You will be supported to fully participate in classes and workshops. The face-to-face workshops are scheduled at convenient times for teachers and other educators. You can choose to participate in these workshops as an online student if you are able to log in to our video conferencing technology at the scheduled times. Alternatively you can access the recordings of the workshops at a more convenient time for you. There will be other opportunities to connect with your peers and tutors through scheduled support sessions using video-conferencing technology or online discussion and collaboration forums.

Assessment items or practicum

Your assessment will involve the development of a digital portfolio which will represent your development of STEM in Education knowledge understanding and skill. In some instances you can use past teaching practices as an example to critique using your new knowledge and in other assessment tasks you will develop practices and strategies which you may be able to incorporate in your future teaching. Importantly you can tailor your assessment items to your current practice or particular interests.

In each unit you will undertake individual or group activities and you will be encouraged and supported to use a range of techniques to record your contribution. These may include written documents media presentations and other digital artefacts.

You will have the opportunity to connect with like-minded peers and be encouraged and supported to share ideas as you work towards transforming your teaching and your students' learning in STEM. You will have access to a range of support services available at QUT. The professional network and relationships developed during the course can continue to benefit you in your future efforts to lead and transform STEM education.

To graduate with the Graduate Certificate in Education (STEM in Education) you will need to complete all units in the STEM in Education major. You may only study the STEM in Education major part time.

The Graduate Certificate in Education (STEM in Education) is only available to non-student visa holders or international students studying from their home country. This course is available 1 year part-time. To graduate with the Graduate Certificate in Education (STEM in Education) you will need to complete all units in the STEM in Education major.

International students studying on a student visa may only study full time. If that's you you will need to refer to Graduate Certificate in Education - Choice of Units to create a full-time course structure.
