CLE gives Monash Law students the opportunity to work in real community law clinics, which are operated by (or in association with) Monash Law. CLE places you with real clients who are seeking legal advice for the array of problems life can throw at you.
Working under the supervision of expert lawyers, Monash Law students learn new skills outside of the classroom; practical skills, including client relations and how to navigate the legal system.
From 2018, Monash Law will be offering a guaranteed clinical education experience for all students who wish to incorporate a practical component credited towards their Monash Law degree. We guarantee our students a place in the Clinical Legal Education program to build their knowledge, experience, and confidence.
We are the first law school in Australia to offer a guarantee like this for our students. This reflects our belief in the transformative effect of experiential education.

In Australia, many people are unable to access justice due to high legal fees, asylum seeker or refugee status and other socio-economic barriers. While Government funded legal aid is available, these services turn away 160,000 people every year because they lack the capacity and funding to meet overwhelming demand.
Added to this is the inadequate number of practitioners with the capacity to provide legal aid and the tightening of government criteria under which clients can access assistance. The result is a growing number of people falling through the gap.
The expansion of Monash Law Clinics in the Melbourne CBD, Clayton, and in partnership with Springvale Monash Legal Service (SMLS) underscores the commitment of Monash Law to assisting vulnerable members of our community, whilst educating our students in practical, ethical and professional legal practice.
Monash University currently has two legal services:
Monash Law Clinics Clayton
Monash Law Clinics allow our students to broaden their experience beyond traditional law, enabling them to gain valuable, real-world experience with clients which enhance their employability in both traditional and non-traditional sectors.
Our Clinical Placements program is part of the expanded Clinical Program - placing law students in organisations both in the legal sector and outside it. Focussing on new and emerging sectors as well as those sectors where our alumni reside, the program has opened up significant experience for our students, which equip them with the skills industry currently demands.
Monash students can apply for externships with the following organisations:
