Course overview

The Graduate Certificate in TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) is designed to provide specialist training in this field. It will develop and extend your understanding of the theories and practices that underpin it.

This course will prepare you to: Gain recognition with the Victorian Institute of Teaching as an accredited TESOL teacher in Victoria Analyse and communicate an understanding of the nature and form of language as a system Critically evaluate and explain the application of current methods for teaching English Manage language curricular and resources which are culturally and linguistically appropriate Understand critical issues in TESOL research, methodology and assessment Understand the nature of research in second language education. What you will learn

Learn to analyse and gain understanding of the nature and form of language as a system. You will develop insight in how to critically evaluate and explain implications of acquiring a second language for learning and teaching.

Course structure

  • Course code: GC-TESOL
  • 6 months full-time, 1 year part time
  • 50 points of coursework, comprising 4 x 12.5 point four specialist core subjects:
    1. Second Language Teaching Methodology
    2. Grammar for Language Teachers
    3. Language Acquisition and Teaching
    4. Supervised Teaching (Second Language).
  • Entry available for Semester 1 and Semester 2

Entry requirements

  • A four-year education degree, or equivalent, or
  • An undergraduate degree in any discipline and at least 100 credit points, or equivalent, of graduate study in education

All applicants must be eligible for registration with the Victorian Institute of Teaching.
