About this course

The educational landscape is rapidly changing. Research is advancing our understanding of how and why we learn, and digitisation continues to transform classrooms around the world. With schools and educational organisations facing new challenges, there's a strong need for educational professionals who can leverage new opportunities and transform the way students learn.*

If you're passionate about continual learning and are ready to advance your career, La Trobe's Master of Education will provide you with the latest in educational best practice and the professional networks to move into leadership or specialist positions.

Explore the big issues in education today. Learn the latest evidence-based approaches to learning and grow your career as an educator and leader. You'll study core subjects on educational leadership, psychology and digital technologies, then dig deeper through a specialisation in inclusion and diversity, leadership and management, or language and literacy. When you choose a specialisation, you'll graduate with it on your academic transcript so future employers can recognise your expertise.

We encourage educators to experiment, innovate, adapt, and address the important challenges of our sector. Learn how to engage with curriculum reforms and design educational programs. Explore the science of language and reading, and understand how to use data to inform evidence-based practice.

Relationships are at the heart of everything we do at La Trobe. We partner with schools, communities and governments to provide our students with access to the best research, teaching and professional networks. Explore diversity in educational contexts, plan for socially just education, and immerse yourself in school, community and cultural learning environments.

With La Trobe's Master of Education, you could graduate faster. Complete your degree in just one year (equivalent full-time study) if you've completed previous study.[1] Designed to meet the needs of working education professionals, this course is offered both fully online and blended (face-to-face and online).

You can choose one of these specialisations:

  • Inclusion and diversity
    • Learn how to create inclusive classrooms that bring out the best in all learners. Explore the latest approaches to inclusive education and hone your skills through an industry placement. Study the impacts of trauma on learning and explore the latest best practice for working with students with an autism spectrum disorder. Learn how to best respond to anxiety, depression and bullying in the classroom, and understand how to build learning environments that are optimised for all genders and sexualities. If you are currently employed by the Department of Education in Victoria, you could be eligible for a full scholarship for this course.
  • Leadership and management
    • Learn how to lead tomorrow's global education organisations. In this specialisation, you'll learn how to create impactful partnerships with a wide range of institutions and explore the effects of globalisation on international education policy. Understand how to lead complex and culturally diverse organisations, and learn how to ethically respond to social, economic and political change in the education sector. You'll graduate with the skills to become a leader in the education sector.
  • Language and literacy
    • Learning to read is the essential first step towards all other forms of literacy. Without reading skills, a child can't access the school curriculum. Beyond the school years, poor literacy skills can severely limit a person's ability to participate in society and can create barriers to work, culture and healthcare. In this specialisation, you'll develop an evidence-based approach to language and literacy. Learn about the science of reading and gain practical skills that will improve your abilities in literacy instruction and intervention.

The qualification awarded on graduation is recognised in the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) as Level 9 - Masters Degree.
