About this course

Do you want to build tomorrow's technologies? Think gaming, voice search, VR, AR and intelligent interfaces like Amazon Alexa.

With La Trobe's Master of Digital Media, you'll design, ideate and create products and platforms during your degree - with the technical and innovation skills to step into an exciting career in digital media after you graduate.

You'll specialise in social media or virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR), where you'll design intelligent interfaces that enhance user experience across applications and platforms.

Customise your degree even further with electives such as computer graphics, virtual reality, mobile and pervasive computing, artificial intelligence and deep learning, as well as broader studies in customer analytics, social media and more.

In your first year, you'll develop fundamental IT skills such as programming and data science and how to visualise data. Subjects in human-computer interaction (HCI) and design thinking centre around making technology that helps humans.

In your second year, you'll focus on more advanced principles of how to apply interactive media design in a professional setting and use your entrepreneurial skills to design and evaluate a digital or physical product. Learn how to improve not only the functionality of a product, but also the experience.

You'll also have an option to choose a capstone project subject, industry-based learning project or thesis to complete your degree.

You don't need a background in interaction design or information technology to study the Master of Digital Media. Our supportive staff are here to guide you throughout your degree. They'll help you get career ready and connect you to industries and organisations across the digital media landscape.

And if you want to exit early, you can graduate with a Graduate Diploma in Digital Media after one year full-time.

You'll learn:

  • Programming skills
    • Learn how to design and implement software solutions using the popular programming language, Python.

  • Human-computer interaction (HCI)
    • Understand how to create user-friendly and functional computer systems. Become fluent in HCI principles including ergonomics, human perception, interface style, interface design guidelines and usability testing.
  • Information visualisation
    • Discover the theories and methodologies of how to visualise abstract data (numerical or non-numerical) to foster effective decision-making. Explore the various data types used throughout the process, from design to evaluation.

  • User experience design (UX)
    • See and feel how your audience interacts with digital or physical products to design product experiences that enhance user satisfaction. Enhance your design thinking and learn how to conduct research, user testing and prototyping.

The qualification awarded on graduation is recognised in the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) as Level 9 - Masters Degree.
