In order to provide a variety of areas for study, the School offers a range of elective law subjects at its Melbourne Campus, with a LAW code. Most elective subjects are offered on a rotational basis. Some electives are offered in summer and winter semesters with some subjects being taught in block mode (e. g. five-day intensives). Law electives are normally only available to undergraduate students enrolled in the Bachelor of Laws or relevant combined degree program. However, a limited number of Bachelor of Laws electives are open to non-Bachelor of Laws students. These subjects attract a Level 3 HECS banding. Please see further entries below for eligibility and lists of approved subjects. Bachelor of Laws students cannot undertake Legal Studies subjects as Law electives. The subject code for Law electives must begin with LAW. However, a number of Criminology subjects are available to Law students as Law electives. In addition, if Bachelor of Laws students are required to select non-law electives as part of their degree they may be able to undertake Legal Studies subjects (subjects with an LST code). Students wishing to study part-time are encouraged to complete core subjects before elective subjects in the early years of the program so they complete the prerequisites for future core and elective subjects. This will give greater choice and flexibility in later years and will permit you to cluster your electives in an area of interest or specialisation. Although Law electives carry a year level code, students can normally undertake electives at any stage of their degree, subject to prerequisites. Students can select from areas such as, Criminal Law and Criminal Justice, Environmental and Water Resources Law, Income Taxation Law, International Law and Human Rights, Public Interest Law and Access to Justice. The School offers many subjects with a practical skills component, such as Clinical Legal Education, Rural and Regional Issues in Justice, Public Interest Law Practice, International Arbitration Practice, International Arbitration Moot, Negotiation, Mediation and Conflict Resolution Skills and Theory.
