About you

What did you study at undergraduate level and when did you graduate? What are you studying now? Are you studying and working at the same time?

My name is Anukul Sharma and am doing a freelancing job based on design and development of the website and other tasks on AirTasker. I studied the Bachelor in Information Technology in 2013 and graduated in 2016. Now, I'm doing my Master of Information Technology in Business Informatics. I'm studying and working at the same time on some freelance jobs in my related field.

Please list the most important stages of your life (school, education, experience abroad, jobs etc.)

The most important stages of my life:

  1. When I did my schooling and got my 10th-grade degree.
  2. When I decided to pursue my career in information technology.
  3. When I decided to pursue my dream to get an international degree and stay here to maintain a high quality of living.
  4. Staying here in Australia with its different multicultural environment exposed me to various people having various opinions.
  5. While doing freelancing jobs, professionalism here gave me more exposure to do relevant IT jobs, getting more jobs related to IT.

How did you get to your current (or most recent) job position and for how long have you occupied it (if applicable)?

I created a website for my client using WordPress, added and edited web pages for their personal blog. It completed just in 3-4 days. It is a freelancing job; that is why it took so little time.

About your course

What made you decide to progress with further study?

The various opportunities, high standard of living, good pay, the love for designing and developing websites and a passion for learning new technologies and professionalism made me self-aware to progress with my further studies. When I did my research on the current aspects of IT fields in the market, it made me realize that I had still more left to do and learn about. The university was providing the things I needed to make my career and this led me to my masters and progress with my studies.

How did you choose your particular further study course (compared to others)? / Were you weighing up any alternative degrees or career pathways before choosing this qualification?

I did some research on my related field that is IT and its current scenario and future outcomes if I further my studies in the field. I made a checklist and the more I researched I got eyeopening facts about the advantages of doing this IT course. I was just considering on the other IT related course like cybersecurity, AI, machine learning and the most compatible field I found for me was Business Informatics.

What was the process to get accepted into your course? What were the prerequisites?

I had to have some IT knowledge while admitting for this course. I had to do IELTS to be tested on the language proficiency since I was from outside Australia. And I had to have some knowledge of Computer related works which I did. Also, it was the minimum score that had to be crossed to get enrolled in the course which was already done by me.

What does your study involve? Can you describe a typical day? (if it’s difficult to describe a typical day, tell us about the last thing you worked on?)

I have a trimester system in which I had to choose 3 subjects. By choosing 3 subjects per trimester I just started studying IT subjects. In the course, I have lectures, workshops and tutorials. I have to attend every lecture, workshop and tutorial for better grades. So, usually doing assignments, workshops and attending lectures is my typical day. Also, working on some freelancing jobs. In this trimester, I had to complete a big ICT project and doing those projects, fixing bugs and also building websites my days went by.

Will this course be beneficial in your career? Where could you or others in your position go from here? Please explain your answer.

While doing many research and analysis, my conclusion was that doing this IT in business informatics course had made me interested in a lot of my work. Any business informatics graduates can get a good career out of the course. Various positions like IT-desk support, web-application developer, IT support analyst, test analyst, developer and many positions in IT fields can be fulfilled by doing this course.

Pros and cons

What do you love the most about your course?

With business informatics I can do the following things that I love the most: - - Be the web developer the world needs right now. - Have knowledge about various aspects of business implications in the real world. - Get relevant IT exposure in ICT fields that are based on real-world application. - Get relevant professional advice, tips and additional feedback on recent activities.

What are the limitations of your course?

The limitations of IT business informatics are that it does not say anything related to IoTs, AIs, Machine Learning and other related fields. With this course, one has limited knowledge of software and coding because it does not have that grip on advanced coding. Also, popular and required IT field like cyber-security, ethical hacking and cryptocurrencies are not discussed here. So, this is one of the disadvantages that are limitations.

A word to the wise…

Which three pieces of advice would you give to a current undergraduate student? They don’t necessarily have to be related to your studies, or even to one’s professional life.

Just decide what you want to do in your life. Be prepared and choose the field that you love the most. Don't rush into anything; just take your time and research. Get information regarding the past, present and future scope of that course. Do not just copy and paste; be creative. The most important thing is to enjoy yourself while doing anything related to that course.
