About this scholarship

The Commonwealth government and Flinders University have established the Indigenous Commonwealth Accommodation Scholarship (ICAS) to assist indigenous students with accommodation and/or relocation costs associated with their study at Flinders University.

The number of ICAS available each year will be determined by annual funding from the Commonwealth government.In 2018 each scholarship was valued at $5355 per annum. The 2019 value is $2728.00 per semester.  Scholarships awarded mid year will only be valid for one semester.

Eligibility

All scholarship applicants must:

  • be of Australian Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent; and
  • identify as an Australian Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander; and
  • be accepted as an Australian Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander by the community in which they live or have lived; and
  • normally be enrolled full-time at Flinders University in an undergraduate or postgraduate course of study or the Foundation Studies program; and
  • have a permanent home address in Inner or Outer Regional, Remote or Very Remote Australia as defined by the Australian Standard Geographic Classification (ASGC); and
  • have relocated to undertake study as per section 2.10.15 of the Commonwealth Scholarship Guidelines (Education) 2010; and
  • not be in receipt of a Relocation Scholarship (available to ABSTUDY and Youth Allowance recipients); and
  • not be in receipt of the ABSTUDY residential costs payment

Scholarships will be available to both commencing students (main round in semester one and mid-year round) and continuing students (main round in semester one only). Previous recipients of an Indigenous Commonwealth Accommodation Scholarship may reapply but will be limited to a maximum of 8 payments in total.

Selection

In selecting recipients the following factors will be considered:

  • Remoteness of permanent home address
  • Financial need
  • University entrance score (commencing students)
  • GPA (continuing students)

Selection of the candidate(s) will be made in accordance with procedures approved by the Director, Student Administration, in consultation with the Office of Indigenous Strategy and Engagement.
