Curtin currently has 2 scholarships opportunities for higher degree by research students in the area of Bio-Activate Materials reseach to study under the supervision of Dr. Abhijit Mukherjee.
Natural habitats such as anthills and corals and formations such as stalagmites and stalactites are ecofriendly and extremely durable. Diverse microbial populations harboured in the soil plays a key role in building these formations. This project proposes to study the natural formations and replicate the processes in the laboratory to develop new materials for construction. Recent metagenomics and transcriptomic techniques will be employed to analyse the microbial communities. Links between the microbes and corresponding environmental conditions that generate materials of desired mechanical properties will be established. The biochemical processes will be replicated in the laboratory and the suitability of the resulting materials for construction of human habitat will be evaluated.
