About this scholarship
The School of Education, supported by the Dr Haruhisa Handa Scholarship Fund, is pleased to offer scholarships for students studying Japanese programs at Curtin University. The objective of the Fund is to enhance Australian scholarly interest in Japanese studies, especially by the medium of Japanese language, and to contribute to sustaining and extending general Australian interest in Japanese studies.
The Undergraduate scholarship
Available to future students, the scholarship may be used to cover HECS fees, books and materials, and other costs related to study at the University. Applicants must continue studying a major in Japanese throughout their course.
The Honours scholarship
Available to current students, applicants must have a level of competence in Japanese language to enable them to complete their research program.
The In-country Study scholarship
Available to current students, the scholarship gives the recipient the opportunity to attend an intensive language course at Ritsumeikan University, Kyoto, Japan during the semester break (July or January). This offer is available for students majoring in Japanese with an excellent academic record.
The Postgraduate scholarship
Available to current and future students, applicants must have demonstrated a capacity to undertake original research and the proposed research topic should further the objective of the Dr Haruhisa Handa Scholarships Fund.

Eligibility criteria
Undergraduate students:
For future students who are interested in studying Japanese - Preference will be given to students who have previously studied Japanese.
Honours students:
For current students who are about to complete a BA (Japanese) or double degree with Japanese and are eligible to apply for the honours program. A level of competence in Japanese language to enable them to complete their research program.
In-country Study:
For current students planning to attend an intensive language course at Ritsumeikan University, Kyoto, Japan during the semester breaks where the course dates do not overlap with Curtin semester dates.
Postgraduate students:
For future and current students who have approval for admission to the PhD – Language and Intercultural Education course. A level of competence in Japanese language to enable them to complete their research program.
