Entry requirements

Applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • be able to demonstrate through a pre-admission interview personal suitability to undertake professional practice as a pastoral counsellor, including self-awareness, relational capacity, personal ethical practice, being able to reflect on and learn from experience, and being open to positive and challenging feedback;
  • hold an undergraduate degree (or AQF equivalent) in theology or psychology, however applicants with degrees in other disciplines are encouraged to apply;
  • have successfully completed the Graduate Diploma of Pastoral Counselling;
  • hold a Graduate Diploma of Counselling from another institution; These applicants may be required to complete the core subject theological component of a Graduate Diploma of Theology before being granted admission to the Master of Pastoral Counselling.

The Master of Pastoral Counselling equips you with the advanced knowledge and skills to provide counselling or enhance your pastoral care practice in a range of faith-based and other institutions. These could include congregational, educational, healthcare, aged care, hospital, corrective services, welfare, university, military, emergency services and industry settings.

Advanced studies

This degree offers you the choice of a clinical specialisation or a research stream. You'll study the latest theories and practices in counselling, integrated within a theological framework, and build your research skills by conducting a research project and completing a dissertation in an area of special interest.

Significant practical component

By attending intensives and a counselling field placement (clinical specialisation stream), you'll develop skills and competencies in counselling practice and the ability to be a self-aware and reflective practitioner through real-world counselling experience.

The Master of Pastoral Counselling (with specialisation) will prepare you to work in a variety of institutional, congregational or educational roles in which formal counselling or working with mental health is a central part. Your opportunities include private practice counsellor, clinical counsellor, organisational staff counsellor, pastoral counsellor, registered counsellor, chaplain, hospital chaplain, military chaplain, school chaplain, aged care chaplain and pastoral care coordinator. You could also further your expertise by pursuing a Higher Degree by Research.
